The Bottom Line Try to be as creative as possible. Utilizing creativity to the fullest. If you force them to read, most likely they won't. Then you become frustrated and so do they.

As an adult we have the ability to get involved in things we wouldn't normally do. What I mean by this is simply getting involved with a book of interest that we normally wouldn't be reading about, in most cases we know this information already or that we choose otherwise.

Dealing with teenager time mostly, I find the easiest way to get him involved in more reading then what he is already reading, is joining this into a project that we may be working on.

One of these projects is now beginning to take place, a trip or let us say some traveling. So I gave him the job of choosing the places of destination. He has come up with about 7 great places, and I have sat with him and chose 5 out of those 7, which leaves us with 5 mutually agreed on destinations. The next part is finding out what are the most attractive hot spots of the area. Again bringing out the books and maps and information located from the Internet or library, we have spent 3 weeks now reading and learning more about different regions.

The next step we will begin next week, is locating the attractions along the way to our destination and home. Trying to maneuver a round trip of great exciting and adventurous traveling. Never missing a thing. So again it is more books, guides, Internet information on destinations.

When finished I will work with him in making out the route map, using MapQuest.com or other, and Randy's Road Atlas. Finally we will have read and learned many areas and learned a great deal of places things and people to see. I of course am an antique crazed person, so I have found a few along the way of 2 of our favorite destinations. The hardest part of this is deciding on which out of the 5 we will take, then keeping the rest of the planned out information for future trips.

The next step is I worked this into his history/geographical home school curriculum. It is enough to cover his one marking period.

By doing this project, we have spent quality time, educational time, school time, and fun time, with a reachable and achievable goal.
