Top 6 things to avoid while pregnant..
Jun 18 '01
The Bottom Line You should know what things can be harmful to your unborn child, and at any cost, stay away from those things.
Although, the womb is a fairly sturdy protector of the growing fetus, some harmful influences cam cross the placental barrier. I thought it was important to share these with all expectant mothers, so that they can avoid these things, and have a happy, healthy baby. After all it is only for 9 months, and why not give your child the best start in life possible.
So here are the top 6 things that you should avoid:
1. German Measles(rubella), especially early in the pregnancy, often affects the fetus's eyes, ears, and heart. The most common consequence of german measles is deafness.
2. X-rays or other radiation, or toxic chemicals can cause fetal abnormalities and deformities. So make sure you let it known that before getting any form of x-ray that you inform them that you are pregnant, most of the time the x-ray can wait. And if you are working around chemicals, maybe it is time you take that leave of abcense.
3. Venereal Diseases, such as syphilis, can cause mental retardation, blindness and other physical disorders. Herpes can affect the fetus only if the mother has an outbreak at the time of delivery. But delivering via c-section will keep the baby out of harms way.
4. Cigarettes- Pregnant women who smoke increase the likelihood of miscarriage, premature babies, abnormal heartbeat and underweight babies. The negative effects of smoking during pregnancy can last long after the child's birth, showing up in increased rates of infant sickness, SIDS, and in later childhood, hyperactivityy and difficulties in school.
5. Alcohol- Women who drink alcohol increase the risk of the fetal alcohol syndrome. Infants with fetal alcohol syndrome are smaller than normal, have smaller brains, and are more uncoordinated, show sleep disturbances, and have some degree of mental retardation.
6. Drugs- The effects of Morphine, cocaine, and heroin can be transmitted to the fetus, as well as commonly used drugs such as antibiotics, antihistimines, tranquilizers, diet pills and excessive amounts of vitamins. So always check with your doctor before taking ANY medication.
So there they are, and I am sure by looking over this list, you can keep yourself and your baby healthy for those 9 months. When they place that tiny bundle of joy into your arms you will be so happy that you did!
