Red Vines, Rootbeer, and a Quarter ~*~ A Legacy of Love

The pearls we possess today and the keys for tomorrow exist because of the generations before us. Let us respect and honor the elderly.

I wish that I could say I've never seen this happen before... (Reply to this comment)

but, unfortunately, I have. In spite of extensive background checks, references and screening, some people who choose this work do so, apparently, because of the easy opportunities for abuse.

It sickens me. What sickens me more is the difficulty of proving wrong-doing -- and the reluctance of the system to do much about it. Part of this stems from the severe shortage of respite workers and caregivers. Agencies struggle to maintain staffing and it is hard to get rid of the few people you have. Even harder to attract more (with the necessary training) at the pitiful wages offered.

Family and friends' vigilance, and vigilance on the part of other caregivers, is the only answer. I hope your family considered prosecuting those "workers." Even if that didn't work, I hope their identities are well-known now to protect others.

Oh -- my grandfather always used to give me a quarter, too, and times were hard. I loved those shiny coins and kept them in a stash for many years. Thanks for the memory... Kristin

it gives me hope that SOME of our senior citizens, not all, but some, are being cared for with love and dignity.

This is a touching review on an issue that many people shut their eyes to. I'm so glad you shared your personal insights - well done, as always :)

I'm so glad your grandparents were rescued (Reply to this comment)

from the people who were taking advantage of them, and happy that they got to spend their final years together in a place where they were well cared for.

And I'm glad that your grandmother has found a new roommate with whom she is compatible.

What a sad story! There ARE some bad people in this world!
