| pilaar39's Full Review: Samsung SGH-X426 |
I won't go into detail about this phone, as many already have. My wife and I both have one, and we like them a lot, as a basic phone.
One thing that did bother us was there was no documented method in the user manual to program a PAUSE in the dial sequence. This is a 'must' if you have need to access an answering service or any other service where you are prompted to enter a series of tones. After calling Samsung, I was told it could be done. The trick is to hold the asterisk key down for a few seconds until it changes to a 'P' on the display.
In my case, I programmed a speed dial to access my home phonemail box.. it looks something like this: 444-555-6666PPP333333# The 3 Ps give 3 seconds of pause until the phone is answered, and then the code (333333#) is sent automatically and I have access to my home mailbox.
Only really annoying thing about this phone is that the option to ring and vibrate at the same time, is really not concurrent. The phone will vibrate 3 times, then ring 3 times. Unfortunately, if you have your phone called forward after 5 rings, you may miss the call.
And of course, the really lame, childish supplied ring tones.. be prepared to download your own custom ring tones (a task, by the way, that is not for the computer faint-of-heart!) Be prepared to spend some time on this if it is your first time!
Another thing I would like to see on this phone (and all phones for that matter) is an option to prefix a number with a '1' for long distance. Often, most people have numbers programmed with just an area code and the number. Unfortunately, if you are out of range, you must look up the number, memorize it, and key it in again, prefixing it with a 1. A good feature would be a LD button to automatically add the 1 prefix to an existing number in the phone book.
Make sure you check your firmware version. (1.7 at the time of this writing) Enter *#9999# to check yours.
Last thing, the manual instructions are not correct with respect to setting your phone to call forward if busy, off, or unanswered. After lots of wasted time trying in vain to get this work, I finally called my service provider (Rogers in Canada) and they told me that I had to enter *61#(receiving phone number)#SEND and #61#SEND to cancel the call forward. (This only routes incoming calls to the other number if your phone is turned off or goes unanswered after 5 rings.. there are other options available.. consult the Wireless Services User Guide - which by the way, did not come with the phone.. I had to ask my service provider for a copy!)
