| yayapex2's Full Review: Sony PlayStation 2 Slimline Console |
January 15, ahh my birthday. I had $200.00 in gift cards to Toys 'R' Us so I decided to go get a PS2. When I got there I was hoping on getting the original but when I was told they didn't have anymore, I bought PS2 Slimline.
The Package (Stand Not Included):
The first thing I did was smell the inside of the box. Why? Don't know, It's just me. Well the first thing on top was the controller, which I'll explain later. Then the AV cable, that I had no use for. Instead I had to buy the RFU adapter. This adapter connects to where you connect the cable wire. Take it out then place this in there. there is also a little thing where you can plug in the cable. Next was the power supply. It is two separate pieces, the AC adapter and AC power cord. the cord is plugged into the wall. Then the adapter (A box about 2 by 4 inches, rough estimate, too lazy too really measure) has a hole where you plug in the cord. On the other side there is a thinner wire that connects to the system. The only way to turn the system off is to unplug it. There is no button that turns it off like the original. Now we get to the system, you ready. It is about 1 inch thin, about 8 inches in length, and about 4-5 inches wide. On the top you have the lid and let me tell you that I'm sometimes afraid to touch it, it is sooo thin. On the bottom you have those little square-looking things that stop it from slipping. On the front there are two ports for the memory cards and two for the controllers, it also has the little Play Station logo that can be adjusted for people that like to stand it or keep it horizontal.
(Sold Separately)
Unlike the Xbox you need a memory card to save your data. Not only do you need it, but it's expensive. These memory cards are 8MB. Each MB is 1000 kb which usually you see in the back of the game cases something kb you know, like how many kb it takes up. There is also the DVD remote. I think the thing looks ugly, ughh just hideous. It's flat, rectangle, and to me it looks cheap. The fact of the matter is that you don't even need it. I can name plenty of others but I don't use them, so I can't really tell you about them, like the steering wheel.
The Stuff Inside:
For the most part not too many people wonder what's inside, just if it works. What I can tell you is that it is more out-dated compared to the Xbox and Game Cube. This also makes it harder for developers to make games because they are so limited. Now don't get me wrong when I say out-dated. I love the system and the graphics don't bother me at all. Some great examples of the better looking games would have to be Final Fantasy X, Front Mission 4, and I know you've heard this one, Xeno Saga. The "stuff" inside is pretty much the same as the original, just in a smaller box. I don't really mind that the graphics are out-dated because it really isn't what makes the game it's the game-play.
The Controller:
The PS2 controller looks just like the PSone controller. It is the same shape just black. One thing I noticed on my controller was little sprinkles. I'm not sure if that means anything or if the controllers that come with the smaller PS2 just have sprinkles. The first button everyone needs to know is the "Start" button and it is right in the center. On the side of it is the "Select" button. Going back to the right is the "X", "O", "Triangle" and the "Square" buttons. The "X" button is usually used to select things or perform an action during game-play. the "Triangle" button is used to jump and other things. Underneath the "Start" and "Select" you have two thumb-sticks. The one on the right is used in a lot of games to look around and adjust the camera. The left thumb-stick is used a lot to control a character. On the left side is the 4 directional buttons, serving the same purpose as the left thumb-stick. On the shoulder of the controller you see "L1", "L2", "R1", and "R2". In my opinion, this controller is better fit for RPGs and games that don't involve a lot of moving around.
Game Overview:
The number one reason I got a PS2 is for the RPGs (Role Playing Games). One thing that PS2 has over Xbox is Japanese-Style RPGs. There are so many of them. There are strategy(Front Mission 4), turn-based(Final Fantasy X), and real-time strategy RPGs that I want to get my hands on. PS2 doesn't have a bad variety of racing games either a good one would be Gran Turismo(PS2 Exclusive). Then comes Grand Theft Auto, which I have for the Xbox. It is one heck of a game with tons to do, and plenty of missions. You also have great action games like Metal Gear Solid 3, which I've been hearing is coming out to Xbox, but it's only rumors. One thing is that If you are looking for FPSers(First Person Shooters), your looking at the wrong place. I don't even like the way the PS2 controller feels when you play them. There's only a few of them too, like Medal of Honor the more popular one. You can also find some games for the younger gamers like Jak and Dexter, and Spyro. I would say that PS2 would be a good investment for anybody. I say this because, there are so many games and a lot of them are really cheap.
Games I've Played and Reviewed:
Growlanser: Generations
Final Comments:
The PS2 Slimline is very attractive looking system. The thing that stinks is that the factory smell goes away very quickly. It is very small, but since it's top loading it limits where you can put such a small system. I also mentioned that the cover has a very cheap feel to it and I'm afraid to touch it sometimes. If you are wondering, it does not have a fan, but you can still play a good 3 hours before giving it a rest. A plus is that it is very silent so when you are playing games you only hear the game. PS2, big or slim, it's still great. You know what they say "It's what's in the inside that counts".
