The Bottom Line Go for the better built machines such as Honda. They will pay for themselves.
PREFACE I just spent 2 hours in my driveway trying to clean the carburetor on my mower's 3 year old Tecumseh engine. It has repeatedly died and failed to start this year, and now will not stay running at all. I replaced the spark plug, air filter and all the gas. My mower is a Yard King but my next door neighbor has essentially the same mower under the Sears Craftsman label. THE ENGINE I won't go as far as to say stay away from Tecumseh, but be sure you use up all your gas at the end of the season. My neighbor and I agree it is a finicky engine under the best of conditions. We both had better luck in the past with Briggs and Stratton motors. THE MOWER Look at the handle. If the top half is held on with two spin-off bolts, you will have trouble, eventually the metal bends and the handle will no longer stay up. It just can't take the pressure of being used as a lever during turns. Also watch out for spin off nuts on the wheels. They have a tendency to back off when you're not looking. We have agreed that the inexpensive Tecumseh driven machines are designed to fall apart within a few years unless babied. It's better in the long run to get a John Deere or Honda that is designed to last. |
