So far, I am a bit disappointed in the radio's capabilities--I have the JVC KT-SR2000. I experience frequent loss of signal, and not just under many small bridges or parking garages, which is a guarantee loss. In the NYC area, the FM tuning capability is basically unusable, due to channel bleed. I have been using the cassette adapter and the volume is noticeably lower than terrestrial radio stations and the stereo spread seems to be
more "narrow".
Some of the talk stations also have a 'low-rez' quality and you can hear sibilance in the voices, i.e., on any words that have the letter "s" in them--it's almost like a low-rez MP3...
Part of the reason I subscribed was for Howard Stern next year and the Net streams do not include news/talk programming at the point. Who knows if that'll be "fixed" by '06'...
After going back to Circuit City to compare my unit against the store, I found it to be similar. I saw the signal loss even occur in the store on a unit that plugs into RCA's. And I got a sales rep to admit that the FM modulator and cassette adapter are no where near the fidelity of the combo units that have Sirius built in.
As for the programming, well, it'll be up to you to determine if the lack in quality of overall service it worth it...kind of like cell phones I suppose....keep in mind that most car stereos do NOT have any RCA adapters to improve the quality of the sound...
The media likes to compare satellite radio to the beginnings of cable TV--but it's a little reversed: when you turned on cable you KNEW it would be on, but you might not want to watch what was on!
And check out their lame CS reply:
Dear ,
We're glad to help! At SIRIUS, we appreciate the time you have taken to contact us regarding your issue with bleedover and sound quality. With a FM Modulated unit, this usually occurs when a local radio station is broadcasting on the same frequency as us. We recommend that you change the frequency settings. To change the frequency setting, please do the following:
-Press the Menu key
-Scroll though the menu until you see an option for
FM Modulator of FM Transmitter
-Press in your select key (sometimes this button is the same as your channel dial)
-Select On
-Select Frequency Selection
-Then select a channel that, on your local FM, consists solely of static.
-Then set your FM radio to the channel that you set your SIRIUS radio to.
If you are receiving static on all the frequencies, there may be radio stations in your area broadcasting on all the same frequencies as us. If you are having issues with the interference of local radio stations, we recommend that you hardwire your SIRIUS radio to your vehicle. We apologize for any inconvenience this issue may cause.
