Opinion Summary
eHarmony is not even worth the free profile
by mjlee22 | Jan 21 '05
Updated on Mar 10, 2005 to include some data I found: "in 2004, eHarmony had 6.5M subscribers, up from 1M in 2003. Of these only 150K were paying members, which was double that of the previous year." This would definitely explain why you can't get much ...

Not much...

None that I'm aware of.

Nope, the system chooses your "matches" for you, no browse feature.

My advice would be to sign up for the free trial and just wait... apparently if you don't sign up for a paid membership within a certain time period the system will crank out a "special offer" for you.

I signed up for a 3-month "special" (forget how much it was discounted from their normal exorbitant rates), but I probably won't be renewing it after it expires.

Another caveat is that they apparently set their paid memberships to auto-renew if you don't un-check that option in your account profile.

On the main review page you can click on "New review alert" to get an e-mail alert whenever the author writes a new review - don't know if that applies to updates or not...

You can also click on the "Comment alert" box next to the review to get an e-mail whenever another comment on the review is posted.

a lot of issues I had with eHarmony, notably how they select "matches"--without our involvement. Like your experience with the X, their process seems unilateral and punitive. I'd much rather find a partner without eHarmony at all.

Thanks for your comments. I added the pricing as of Jan-2005 to my review ($50 for 1 month or $250 for 1 year). I also tried to clarify the searching / browsing. Basically, you cannot browse. eHarmony controls your list of matches. They say that they weed out 99.7% of the people who would be incompatible with you. You only get to see the people they matched to you.

Since I didn't become a paying subscriber, I don't know if there is a chat feature, but I have not seen that documented in any of the marketing materials, so I assume there isn't any chat or IM.

So far probably the best on Eharmony thus far here. I joined, but did not pay anything so I could not view the photos of the matches they selected, but did have the option to cancel them out.

I received several emails about matches and still to this day months later they keep sending me emails to buy the book by the owner and join at all these special rates.

The site stinks after spending like you said 1-2 hours doing the questions and your profile. The biggest beef I had with them was that I wanted to change the age of the males in the search since they were sending me men in their 50s when I am not even 45, but I was informed I could not lower the age, only increase it.

I guess having an owner do the commercials would be a deterrent not to sign up.

Good luck

What else does the site have to offer? A chat venue, what about a browse profile feature?

Also, if a potential customer wanted to sign up, how much does it cost after the free trial?

If you update, please let me know.
