The Bottom Line Black comedies are what normal comedies usually are not: uncomfortable and intelligent. Watch one tonight!

Okay. There are certain things that we just shouldn't laugh at. These things? Violence, sex, crime, drugs, and hate. Well, black comedy turns all of these taboos on their heads. In fact, it is the point of a black comedy to laugh at the unfunny and the uncomfortable. This is the precise reason why I find it to be much more interesting, intellectual, and for that matter funny than ANY slapstick comedy. But, to be quite honest black comedy isn't for everybody. Here's a quick rundown of a few of my favorite black comedies of the last ten or so years....

To Die For: A great movie featuring Nicole Kidman as a TV weathergirl who would do absolutely anything for success. She cons people, kills people, has sex with teenagers, and is just an all-around bad lady. My favorite scene in the entire film is the last one with...featuring a nice Italian mafia death. WONDERFULLY funny. Watch this one :)

Clay Pigeons: Funny movie with Vince Vaughn as a very bad man that also happens to be a serial killer. It's ridiculously funny and also features Joaquin Phoenix and the dry (yet hilarous) Jeanine Garafalo as an investigator. Somehow, I always find serial killers to be funny fellows.

Very Bad Things: This is bachelor party gone horribly bad. There is sex, murder, drugs, lots of alcohol and the bride from hell. You don't even know who's really bad, but I have to say that Cameron Diaz is great at the bridezilla. I just absolutely loved this movie, but it's pretty bloody :)

Heathers: Perfect example of black comedy. There's a group of four friends...and there's a new guy in town. One of the friends (the only one NOT named Heather) is disillusioned with her stature in the school and how her friends treat others. The new guy then manages to convince impressionable Veronica to help him kill her friends (which fortunately includes Heather...played by Shannen Doherty).

One Night at McCools: All Liv Tyler's character wants is a happy home...and a DVD player. She's in the game to trick guys into letting her stay in their home. It's insane, and funny, and bloody, and uncomfortable. It was a bit much for me to see Paul Reiser in bondange and John Goodman as a love interest. Yikes...but, that's black comedy for 'ya.

American Psycho: The book was a black comedy, and the movie that followed was also a black comedy. Set in yuppie land in the 1980's, this is the story of an exceptionally gruesome serial killer. What makes this film funny are the characters and their bizarre fascinations. Also the music...there are so many references to 80's music! Check this one out, but I warn you it's exceptionally bloody (but fun, of course).

I'd also like to mention that another quality of black comedy is that it's very situational. You laugh at the people who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. People like me who don't like "regular" comedies often flock to black comedies....And, in my opinion they are just so much better :)
