Wait, you mean the iPod shuffle is an Apple product, and it doesn't support firewire? Bah!
Great review man.

Re: Not recommended, even at $149??? (Reply to this comment)
by yusakugo
The problem is that you have to pay $29 in addition to the iPod Shuffle. Apple has made a huge business of the accessory market... unfortunately, this includes AC adapters which I think is a mistake by Apple.
Regardless, I still think the iPod Shuffle is more of a not recommended in epinion and uses but I hope that my review showed more of pros and cons to the Shuffle unit... which is very likely to have a huge following. I'll continue with my iPod mini and Zen Micro for the time being... NapsterToGo has some nice advantages over iTunes.

Not recommended, even at $149??? (Reply to this comment)
by eportzline
C'mon- "Recommended: No?" At $149, this little, tiny, lightweight player is completely compatible with iTunes, plays MP3, other unprotected, and protected file formats. Oh, and it functions as a flash drive?
I agree that this is a good companion for the iPod or iPod mini and might not be a full-enough featured music player, but for the money, the interface to the iTunes software and its ease-of-use, I don't see how you can't recommend it.
On addition to your review- your comment that one must have access to a USB port on a computer to recharge the iPod shuffle (and not all USB ports will recharge it!) is a little misleading. Even though a charger is not included in the package, one can purchase a power adapter, that like the power adapter that accompanies Apple's notebooks, it is rather small and compact. In short, there is a way to recharge the iPod shuffle without access to a computer-attached USB port.
FYI- I am not an Apple user. I have just gotten an iPod shuffle but use Windows as my OS. Not a fan of Microsoft, either, but not an Apple fanatic.

Eric

Ok review (Reply to this comment)

You might consider trying the latest iPod Shuffle update (2-22-05) to see if this improves the audio performance. My 1GB Shuffle sounds just as good as my iPod Mini and iPod Photo (30GB) and lacks any noises between songs. This is true if I use external speakers, Bose headphones, and my 600W home stereo. The update appears to have improved audio performance and that is something you might want to share with others.

Re: Good coverage (Reply to this comment)

It didn't have any stoppage of play when vigorously shaking the unit up and down... something I wouldn't try with my iPod Mini or Zen Micro.

Good coverage (Reply to this comment)

I'm considering getting one of these to run with - steered clear of any hard disk based MP3 player for skipping reasons.
Would have liked a bit more information about the stability of the flash based Shuffle and suitability for atheletics, but other than that, really good coverage.
Lanyard problem had not occured to me and thanks for raising it.

Very nicely orchestrated review! You've now taught me just about every key aspect to this little MP3 player; I liked it! Though I had done a lot of research on this product about one week ago, you've introduced me to things [such as no AC adapter] and really battery life/sound results, etc. Thanks for the great review, definitely "Very Helpful."

I was surprised as well... I preordered as soon as Amazon listed the product and was very surprised to have received it so soon. I wish I didn't pay for two day shipping though.
I honestly not sure who Apple is really trying to market this to.
People are selling new iPod Shuffle unit on eBay for outrageous prices as well. Take a look and gawk at the ridiculous asking prices.
