I do miss being a summer (Reply to this comment)
by Epicure
Glad you are having fun. Some great tips in your review. I might also add, bring ear plugs. I know one would expect the testing room to be quiet, but the school can't necessarily control outside noise, like construction. When I took the NY bar exam at the Coliseum, during the entire afternoon of our first day it sounded like people were playing bumper cars with shopping carts on the floor above. What a nightmare!
Nice job!

Go with the soda... (Reply to this comment)

...because candy wrappers will annoy those sitting next to you. Please dont bring in candies that must be individually unwrapped, like starburst or now and laters.
Thanks, great review,

Re: hey (Reply to this comment)

While I certainly understand why you may disagree (I am certainly not advocating that one make a regular diet out of candy bars and Pepsi), I do state within the section that you are referring to that one should eat a breakfast (I gave a muffin as an example, a fiber-filled breakfast food) or lunch before the exam. The candy or Pepsi are to be eaten toward the end of the 3-and-a-half to 4-hour exam, not as a meal substitute.
While you may disagree with my reasoning, it is based on my experience and those experiences of fellow law students.

I simply cannot recommend sugar and I think your reasoning for doing so is bad. All you need to do is eat some kind of high fiber bread shortly before the exam so it will give you energy when you need it later.

But can you twirl the pen? (Reply to this comment)
by levda
Neither can I, but I've always been in awe of those who have the fine point Pilot Pen (I have a box in my desk drawer right now) twriling talent.
Amazing review.
I so don't want to go to law school.
This is why.
The CPA exam was bad enough...

Ah, the Pilot precise. I remember that pen was like a religion once upon a time for me. And I remember encountering fellow students with the same pen, exchanging a knowing wink, we were part of an elite, those in the know of what a superior writing instrument we possessed. The fine line, the smooth even ink flowing effortlessly from each stroke. ahh, those were the days until I was awakened to the dark dangerous truths of the Pen,
Whose ink always seeped through to the other side making the other unusable, and whose explosions have ruined a good number of bags and pant pockets. Oh evil vile Pen.
Ok, anyway, if you get to self-aggrandize, I get to too, Proof was awesome, for those who haven't seen it: http://benho.epinions.com/content_20844809860
oh, and go Mets!

Running out of ink (Reply to this comment)

It's something I'm sure my law profs wished upon me many times, without success. It would've been better than trying to read my writing, which I know accounted for a letter grade difference in my overall averages.
Maybe I have an ADD case.

Hey, don't knock these law firm sweatshops! With all this courting (seeing Proof was great but did I have to see the Yankee game that was lost to the Mets?), one could almost think that firm life would be great until they keep you there until 2:30 in the morning, three days in a row. Oh, well. They haven't lured me. Yet.
And, since I seem to take my laptop with me to lunch everyday, I am getting a lot more Epinions, I mean, research done.
Still tolling away at Bar/Bri? I don't want to think about the Bar exam yet. I have a year. I can delude myself into believing it will be eliminated by then.

the candy bar wrapper! Or it could be cough drops, as I've had at least one person with a cough in many of my exams.
Great epinion, Cate--humorous, yet helpful as well. Too bad there are such strict rules for the Bar exam--no water or food allowed! Hope you're enjoying the summer in NYC. I guess those notorious sweatshop firms are really nice to their summer associates, since you're still regularly contributing. =) Take care!
Sincerely,
Anna

pens, pens everywhere but not a drop of ink... (Reply to this comment)
by Tibullus
Personally, when it comes to test taking and ink, I am a fan of the fountain pen. Not only does your test look that much cooler when you write with one (ok, so I'm a sucker for aesthetics, even on a test), but you always know how much ink you have left just by looking, your pen is most likely not going to break down (if it does, you have more problems on your hands than just being out of ink) and you can easily carry ink cartridges with you.
On this line, I'm a fan of the Waterman Paris pen...

Why? Because:
1) Those are great tips for ANY test-taker.
2) I, too, love the Pilot Precise Roller Ball pen, in black (I always use black pens whenever possible).
3) You rule.

Snapple Lemon Ice Tea is the nectar of the Gods (Reply to this comment)
by nollequeen
Excellent epinion, just reading it brought back all the stress and horror of law school.
The orange Hostess cupcake is considered by many to be the essential breakfast food for the morning of the bar exam. I refused to believe it but ate two the second time around and it seemed to do the trick.
