Refrigerator Shopping?

Jun 21 '01

The Bottom Line Remember, you will have your refrigerator for several years. Take your time looking and purchase the refrigerator that you want!

Everyone needs a refrigerator if they want to eat. Refrigerators can be purchased with many extra features, they come with icemakers, ice and water dispensers, water filters, slide out shelves, and windows in the doors. These are nice but they are not necessary. Before shopping for a refrigerator there are few things that you need to think about.

1. What are the dimensions of the space where the refrigerator will sit? This is very important if you want the refrigerator to fit. The dimensions may limit your choice of refrigerator.

2. Make a preliminary visit to the stores just to look and see. Go home and really think about the features that you are interested in, are they just cosmetic or something that would actually be used.

3. Set a price range. Look at your budget and decide what the most is that you can spend for a refrigerator. I am not saying that you should purchase the most expensive one that you can. This is not just for immediate use, but also for many years to come. So naturally, you need to consider what your needs will be in five years.

4. Which type of refrigerator do you want? Side-by-side, top freezer, or bottom freezer. You should do your research about energy efficiency, storage space, and reliability.

5. What are the features that you want? Do you want an icemaker? Do you want a dispenser? Do you want slide-out shelves?

6. Which color do you want? White, black, bisque, or almond? There is a slight extra charge for colors other than white. The color scheme in your kitchen may determine your choice.

7. Now its time to shop! Go everywhere that sells a refrigerator. Look at everything that will fit and has the features that you want in your price range.

8. Compare prices. Many stores will usually run sales on refrigerators, 10% cash back or no financing for a few months. Calculate what the savings will be to determine the better price. Do you need your refrigerator delivered? Do they offer free delivery or is there a charge? This should also be factored into the price.

9. Now its time to decide. You’ve looked everywhere and narrowed it down to two or three choices. Which of these is best for you? Which one do you like the best? How do the options compare? Is it available in the color that you want? How much capacity does it have?

10. Now that you’ve selected your refrigerator, do you want the service plan? I’ve heard that it is a great insurance plan. I think that is the best way to describe it. If something happens and you use it, you’ll be glad you got it. But if you never use it, you’ll think that you wasted the money.

I hope this will help you in choosing your refrigerator. My husband and I recently purchased a refrigerator. We were not able to purchase our first choice due to dimensions, but we did find one that we both like. Good luck!
