| snowwoman1983's Full Review: 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Ext Cab |
I am new to reviewing so please bear with me. So heres a little background: I am 5'2", small frame. My husband is 6'3" X-LG frame. We both feel very comfortable driving it, no problem getting in and out, or seeing.
We bought our '02 Chevy truck used. It was in our price range and quite a few family members are current/former owners. All the former owners have bought newer. We have had the truck for almost a year now. No problems at all.
We do not have children of our own, but frequently have one or two even three sometimes in there weekly. The car seats are a little tricky to get the right position. They don't have the most legroom, but in the center there is adequate room. The tethers/latch whatever is easily accessible and we use them each time. We also frequently have friends and family in there and two men (6'3"+) fit ok in the backseat.
The "hidden" four doors are very convenient. Also the backseat easily folds up to put toolboxes, blankets, tow chains and ropes under it. There are little trays you can buy to fit under the seat, but unless you are storing muddy boots, there is no real need for it.
When we pull a trailer behind it the truck doesn't have any power issues, although with frequent towing I would recommend getting a power brake. Our truck gets used and abused. We have put 20,000 miles on it already and other than general maintenance we have not had a problem.
I recently drove from MN to OK. I was comfortable, after about 7 hours of straight driving I was beginning to get back pain, and my legs were tired. So thanks to the power seats I just put my seat lower. The lumbar support is manual, and dont ask me why I didn't adjust it before I left, but yeah it definitely helped. I feel "hugged" in the seats; they form to your body, cushy yet firm and supported. The seatbelts are great! They are in the seat; they don't cut into your neck, and dont end up flopping around. When you move your seat, they move with you.
We live in a rural area and snow is an issue. We rarely need to use the four-wheel drive; the truck just cuts through the snow on its own. The bed does affect driving on ice, but you just need to go a little slower around curves and it is fine. Along with push button 2H, 4H, and 4L there is an auto 4. Kind of nice on country roads that are patchy with ice, snow and drifts.
The cup holders are big and out of the way. They keep big and small cups from tipping over, even on bumpy gravel roads. The radio works great. The CD player has issues thanks to us having the dealership install a remote starter. There is a short somewhere but that isnt the trucks fault. The gauges are easy to see, there is a digital message center that tells you everything.
For a truck it gets decent gas mileage, but lets face it if you are looking for great gas mileage you arent going to buy a truck meant to work. It is easy to maneuver and drive in traffic, along with parking. Of course you cant just whip into a parking space like a little car, but we rarely have trouble finding parking. It fits into the parking garages and car washes too.
I suppose I should talk about the engine. Well heres a typical womans perspective. It is there, it works and it lets me race the little Hondas. Good enough, no I didnt think so. It is quite powerful, even when towing a full load. It doesnt whine or slug up hills; it gracefully picks up speed. When you arent towing it races up to speed like a little car.
I wanted to also let you know why I gave it a 4 for quality and roominess. The quality is great, but there is some road noise, very little but there is some. Mainly on very windy days. Also the roominess, well lets face it the backseat is small. If you want frequent passengers back there look at the crew cab, with four full doors.
The truck rides smooth, and feels like a car. It is comfortable and reliable. Even on the freezing cold days it sits outside and starts with no problem. You are up high, yet low enough to go under the canopies at fast food joints and car washes. No problem getting in and out, even for my 80-year-old grandma. I could go on and on about the truck, and if you got this far you know we love it and I know this truck will last us for many more years.
