Pros: Seats 5+ more room in the truck bed! Tie Downs Versatility! The truck bed liner.
Cons: You can feel every bump in the road, the wheels spin on slippery roads.
The Bottom Line: It's everything I wanted in a vehicle! If you have to haul, move or buy something large, it works! Great tie-downs. Plus I can bring the family with me too!

| BEVSTER11's Full Review: 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac |
Go ahead and read other reviews for the specs, here I'll tell you what I like about this truck...because, IN PARTICULAR, this is the truck I was looking for.
Here I'll tell you the truth about what it's capable of and more.
I've had this truck for a few years now, I bought it used, with 5000 miles on it.
My truck is Green, 2-ton, 6-cylinder, 2-wheel drive, 4-door, comfortably seats 5, and has room in the bed for storage. What's most important to me after driving it for 2 years, is how does it perform?
Well, I have driven this truck in the rain on the winding dirt roads back in the mountains of Colorado Springs and through dirt pot holes - the likes of 12"-18" deep...and it handled like a charm (slow & easy is the way to go). I've driven over broken cement 3 feet high (handled great...again slow & easy). I've driven through several small rivers 60-100' across 6-15" of slow moving water... again this truck handled great! I driven up steep hills and back down. I've taken this truck on a 6,000 mile trip and had great luck (no breakdowns) and great mileage on cruise control and also on many 1200 mile trips. We drove it up into the crystal mines in Alabama, through the wet clay and dirt & pebble roads. No slippage problems, no breakdowns.
This past hurricane season, our 60' tree started to tilt and we had to cut down about 40' of it and we hauled all of it to the dump, in about 6 trips. We put several 200-300 pound stumps in the back truck bed and never even scratched or dented the liner.
I also bought a King Size bed this last year and the guy at the loading dock told me that it would never fit...dot dah dah dah!!!! I'm smarter than he knows, I opened the truck bed which gives me a total of 6 feet in length, then he placed the 2 pieces of the bottom bed on top of each other, and they were level with the top of the truck bed, then he put the King Top Mattress over them, then tied it down, using the TIE DOWN KNOBS on the truck!! Darn! I didn't mentioned the Tie Down knobs!!! The best idea on this truck, somebody finally got smart!! These knobs are amazing with all the trips I have made to the dump and hauling things around it's so simple to wrap your rope around, throw the rope over the truck usually to my husband, he ties them on his end throws them back to me and just wrap the rope around and around. These are Great! Don't forget it! The other guys in the lines at the dump starring down my tie down knobs...they're jealous...I know it!!!! You should see some of their funky tie down jobs with straps in the wheel wells and underneath the bumpers!!!
It's amazing the paint still looks brand new, and I probably only wax it twice a year! I just got new insurance the other day for it and the insurance lady, came back in and said Wow! that is one nice truck, looks brand new!
What I really don't like about my truck is this...I really hate to say anything bad about this truck, but...right after or during rain, it has really bad traction, for instance, if you are sitting at a red light and it turns green, you take off, the tires don't grip the road and the front wheels spin. You have to take your foot off the gas and let the tires grip the road and then proceed again extra slow.
Now the other thing I don't like is...you feel every bump, crack, dip, pot hole, sewer cover, and anything else you can possibly think of. It's annoying! Don't say I didn't warn you...if you don't like feeling them...I don't recommend this truck for you! It's also a ford, it takes a little longer to warm up in the cold weather.
Also, don't tell the guys I said this, but if you're a girl and you still want that all-around vehicle for hauling, for buying large items that never fit into that car you have, still having room for groceries and family. This is more of a girl's truck, than a guys!
It's a lot of truck, test drive it and make sure it's what you really want! Your vehicle should represent the life you have and life you want to live!
Enjoy!
Ford's Sport Trac!
Revision:
The reason I didn't get into the other factors, is that I CHOSE TO MAKE MY REVIEW ABOUT THE TRUCK'S USEFULNESS!!!
You can read someone elses review for all that technical BS, I WANTED TO SHOW YOU THAT THIS IS THE TRUCK FOR THE PERSON WHO HAS STUFF TO DO, STUFF TO HAUL, PLACES TO GO!! and it's true, this truck is for all that stuff!
As for your comments, here's the lowdown...
Powerful Engine...Oh yeah! It can haul 2200 lbs.
Merging depends on the driver...it's a truck, honey! Passing...yeah it's a truck (a beautiful truck, but a truck, take your time don't be a fool! It really depends on the driver though. The seats (when I sat in the seat, I literally knew this truck was for me, leather, adjustable lumbar for driver, they don't recline all the way though, which makes it difficult to sleep at rest stops when travelling. The sound system is impeccable, yet, even if your windows are open and you have the sound turned up really LOUD, it kinda stays in the truck.
Climate controls are easy to understand, mostly icons, but I'm pretty conservative and with the ability to open 5 windows, you've got more air and ventilation coming through this truck than you could possibly believe. The five windows are also great if you have a fly, bug, mosquito or whatever flying around in there, just open up all 5 and it's gone in seconds.
There you have it!
It's still a heck of a truck!
I've made my own seat covers because I couldn't really find
any that fit, I had to keep taking them back. Quick hint,
buy a couple of Men's XL or XXL stretch shirts that have 3 or 4 button in front (pullovers) that you really like the pattern on, cut off the sleeves, and turn them inside out, place over the seats, and pin along the shoulder seams, remove them, and sew along the pinned area removing the pins before you get to them. Turn them right side out and place them back over your seat and button up the buttons and tuck the front into the seat crack where the upper and lower part of the seat come together. They'll look great!
