The Bottom Line A child should have to work for his/her allowance, don't just hand it to them. They should also be advised on what to spend their money on, not foolish junk.
A child should have the responsibility of managing his/her own money. I was given an allowance when I was a child. My mom started giving me money when I was 10. She started off at giving me a dollar by having me pick tomatoes, so a dollar a tomato. Then when I was around 13, they gave me $7 a week, that lasted up until my senior year in high school. I basically didn't have to do a thing to get my allowance, I just took it. Looking back, I didn't really deserve my allowance, I didn't do any household chores. I blew most of my money on books and cassettes. I wish I would of pooled all my money together in a bank account and saved, instead of blowing it on trivial things. |
