I ordered some smaller items from Northern Tool, including a chain saw blade and some masonry wheels, back in November. No problems with that order, but it did take a while to ship.
Recently, they advertised their Northstar line of snowblowers on sale. I went to the website and found a decent 10.5hp blower that was advertised with free shipping. I had the item on my screen ready to order, but I figured I would check out other places such as Sears for comparables.
I decided to purchase the Northstar a few hours later and add it to my cart. To my dismay, the website went haywire, and I kept getting exception screens with some jsp jargon that obviously told me this was going to require a phone call. I called their 800-number and talked to a rep, who gave me that most-dreaded phrase that no customer ever wants to hear, "That item is not in stock." GRRRRRR!!!!
Why do they advertise items on sale that they clearly do not have?!! I remained calm and diligent and asked if there was a comparable item. "Oh, sure, you can get the Husqvarna with the same horsepower. It's only $100 more, but no free shipping, so it will cost $116 to ship." Of course! I can't really say this was a bait-and-switch tactic because I asked for the comparable, he did not suggest it, but I was left with that distinct feeling of somebody trying to cheat me.
Bottom line is I would not feel comfortable purchasing from this company again unless I phoned to verify stock. If I have to phone in every order, then what's the point of having a website? Not convenient for me, and costly to them. Therefore, I doubt I will make any future purchases from Northern Tool unless the price is too good to ignore, and I have the time to chat.
