Raku, Washington, D.C......Magic Mushrooms and More
by tombarnes | Feb 01 '05
Pros: Great noodles, mostly inexpensive, but be careful with those small plates....
Cons: Can be crowded and noisy at times, we wish they were open later, no reservations

The whole "small plates" thing is (in my opinion) a great innovation in the restaurant industry. It's such a treat to get to sample lots of different things rather than one or two mega-servings. You're right, though... an evening's worth of moderately-priced plates can result in severe sticker shock at the end of the night!

You should be thankful, I showed great restraint in resisting a comment on:

This was one of my favorite restaurants when I lived in DC. I went to the Bethesda location a couple of years back and thought it was better than the original.

Great review as always!!

The Grilled Portabello ($4.50) was one thing I barely got to try. I was allowed one bite, if I recall correctly. Marinated in soy and a clever mix of spices, the big mushroom slices are sauteed and served with crisped garlic. I'll have to order my own next time

That mushroom is one of the best foods ever to cross my tongue.... oh. my. gawd.

I will have to try it next time I am up in that area. I love the restaurants near the Dupont circle area. One of my favorites was a Greek place called Zorba's on the circle.

Anyway...great review.
