| xyzwyatt's Full Review: Rubbermaid Seal'n Saver Cereal Keeper 5161 |
Having kids that arent old enough to read really sets back productivity around here. My patience is really limited in the morning before my pot of coffee so anything to curb conversation is a benefit for me. The minute my kids roll out of bed they want breakfast, but we have a lot to choose from so in the past I had to pull each box off of the shelf and show them the picture on the front sometimes going through them several times before they settled on the one that they wanted. I found the Rubbermaid Seal'n Saver Cereal Keeper a great benefit for morning madness because they are clear and see-through. Now I can just aim them at the cereal shelf and they can point.
Im not a big Rubbermaid fan so Im not sure why I got this particular container. I think this container looked like it would be an air-tight container and I liked how the lip of the lid tightly fit over the base of the container. The container has nice appeal; it is curved all the way around for a little style. It is has an indented side that is easy for grasping but is a thinner width than other brands that Ive had. It makes for easier grasping when on the top shelf, but not when sitting on the counter. The indention is grooved for traction which is essential since the container will be heavy at times. The container is a flexible plastic so if it were dropped it would not break and hopefully the lid doesnt fall off. The lid needs to be placed on and then seated all the way around. The rubber lip around the lid extends off the lid a little as if it were a tail. I love the tail because it makes it easy to grab when on the top shelf. On the top of the lid there is a round opening that can be lifted up for pouring.
The container is 1.5 gallons and is specifically designed for cereal. It will hold up to 24 oz. of cereal so nearly all boxes of cereal will fit in this. It is about 11 x 11 inches, about the same size as cereal boxes so wherever you would normally put your cereal boxes this will probably be going as well.
I think the container does a wonderful job of keeping cereal fresh. We live in a humid climate so our cereal gets sticky quickly in a box. Ive never had to throw cereal away that was in this container.
Being clear is a great thing because it is easy to see when you are running low on cereal. Boxes also hide behind other boxes and I dont know where they are for awhile. I think the clear containers get a lot more attention than boxes do.
This can be used for other things besides cereal though we usually have a steady flow of cereal to keep it full. Occasionally we use our container for popcorn. Dog or cat food could be stored in a container like this however the smell would eventually absorbed into the plastic after awhile. I havent had the smell absorbing with cereal which is a step above the previous cereal containers that I had. The container cleans up easily with warm soap and water. The container is too tall for a dishwasher.
This container sounds pretty good so far, meets all of my needs. But then comes the super challenge. My 11-year-old son, Bigger than his Britches and his 5-year-old sibling Me-Me Girl enter the scenario. Bigger than his Britches cant seem to figure out that the big whole in the top comes out fast. Me-Me Girl doesnt understand the concept of the pour spout at all and takes the lid completely off and sticks her hands in it.
My son is in the call me pre-teen stage and doesnt want me pouring his cereal for him anymore which is fine with me. The problem however is that at least twice a week it is all over my floor. Nothing else ever gets spilt, including a traditional box of cereal so Im going to have to blame the container for this. The container is simply not kid friendly. The container is too tall, the whole is too large, and it comes out too fast for children. It also will probably be on the top shelf where other tall boxes go so children usually cant reach that high.
I have noticed that the cereal that we have comes out way too fast; I often have to pour some back into the container because it comes out more that a serving size. We have things like Rice Crispies and Cocoa Pebbles which may be the problem. Perhaps larger cereal would work better.
The only other drawback that I can think of is that there is nowhere to label or date what is in the container. Cereal lasts a really long time so shouldnt be much of a problem but if youre storing other things in the container it might be.
I have an assortment of different cereal containers; I havent found one that I completely like. I only have one of these and Im considering going with more but Im not convinced that its the best. I think I will try other containers before making a set out of these. If you dont have kids getting into your cereal this will probably work out nicely if you have a tall shelf to sit it on.
