I use this same container for my own choice of cereal and I know what you mean about the hole being too big or something. Nevertheless, I do love the way it keeps it fresh.
What I did the last time has worked great. I bought the BAG of cereal, rather than the box, and cut the top off and put it into the container. It seems to work better, but I'm not sure why. lol...(too early in the morning, I guess.)
