Epson 1270--Great Buy if you can find one! (Reply to this comment)
by steve45
The Epson 1270 has been replaced by newer models, but it's still an EXCELLENT machine!
There are many sources of aftermarket inks, including archival inks, re-fill kits, replacement cartridges, bulk inks, continuous flow ink systems, etc. There is tremendous support for this printer, not all from Epson. Check out www.inksupply.com This printer will be around for a long time.
A few people had trouble with colors fading, but I've never seen it. Friends with the 1270 haven't seen it, either.
Operation is quiet. Roll Paper Adaptor is available, now. Epson offers a great selection of papers online. The Watercolor Paper gives beautiful prints!
My only complaint is that the software (Adobe Photoshop LE) makes it very difficult to print pictures off-center.
I know professional photographers that have been using 1270's everyday. You couldn't pry it away from them!

Re: Cartridges+for+1270 (Reply to this comment)

The 1280 appears to be little more than a 1270 that has a slightly larger print area (all edges), so gone is the necessity of a ~3/4" white border along the bottom of the page.
On ink cartridges, I can occasionally find black, but not color, in my local stores. I've gone the route of internet/mailorder, but the lack of a local source means that I am risking getting "stuck" at some point if I fail to keep enough backups around.
I have recently noticed in one of my computer catalogs that someone (Rhino?) is now making a non-OEM clone cartridge, which should help control costs.
Finally, for Apple Macintosh users, the Epson OS X support website page states that there are not currently any OS X printer drivers for the 1270.
...or the 1280 or 1500/1520 printers as well. There's no information on if a driver will or will not eventually be made available

Cartridges for 1270 (Reply to this comment)
by kweckstrom
For what it's worth,
The 1270 and the 1280 use the same cartridges (T007 for black, T009 for color). They're readily available everywhere in my area (Metro NYC). Buy.com also has decent prices on them as well.
But either way, the 1280 is the way to go. I recently got rid of my 1270 in favor of the 1280 and do not regret it.
