| timebomb85's Full Review: Sony PlayStation 2 Slimline Console |
I bought my Playstation 2 console back in June of 2002. I was jealous of alot of my friends because they all had a Playstation 2 and were playing all kinds of cool racing games and shooting game that were incredibly realistic while I was playing my Nintendo 64. Once I bought my Playstation 2 (PS2) games never looked the same.
//buying my Playstation 2//
I had a tough time finding a PS2 in my area. I checked so many stores (Toys R Us, Kmart, Walmart) and were all sold out, I was so aggravated because I've wanted one since release but was always to expensive for me. I called Target and they had 1 PS2 left in stock, and at the time, I lived in a different town where Target was about 8 miles away, so I got in the car and my mom raced over to pick this system up. Luckily they had the PS2, I was afraid someone else was gonna get it before me. So we got the PS2 and happily walked out the door.
//setting the system up//
The box includes the Playstation 2 console, 1 Dual Shock 2 Controller, a power cord, the composite video cables (yellow, white, red) and all the instruction manuals, and waranties and stuff. The console is easy to set up. Simply take it out of the box, connect the composite cables (yellow, white, red) to the jacks on your tv. (If your tv does not have the yellow, white, red jacks, you will need to purchase an RF modulator) and then plug in the dual shock 2 controller to the port on the PS2, plug in the power cord, and you're ready to play a game.
//turning the system on// First, you flip the main power switch on the back of your PS2 (on the left side) and a red indicator will light up on the front of your PS2. When the red indicator lights up, press it (also the reset button) the light will turn green and you're PS2 will boot up. When you turn it on for the first time, the system will ask you to set the time, and the date, and some other things, and then once you finish, press the open button (blue light) the tray will open up, put your game in or DVD/CD, and you're ready to play.
//playing the PS2// The PS2 controller is very comfortable to hold. It's small, but has many buttons, so people who have never used a Playstation might have a tough time at first getting used to the system. Here are all the buttons: D-pad (left, down, right up) 2 analog sticks, square, triangle, circle, x, L1, L2, R1, R2, L3, R3, select, start. It might sound like alot but easy to master. The controller is pressure sensitive which is great for car racing game, so the harder you press the button, the faster you accelerate. The controller also vibrates so if you a playing a shoot game and shooting an AK-47, you can feel the shock which is cool as well.
//games// There are so many PS2 games avalible right now it's not even funny. There is a huge selection availible, you will not have a hard time deciding what game you should get. Most of the games are priced around $30, some are $20, and the new releases are around $50. So if you get alot of games, it's going to add up. I have a friend who spend well over 1k in Playstation 2 games, so becareful. Also if you ever want to trade in PS2 games if you get sick of them or something and they are in good condition, you can take them to a store such as Gamestop, or EBgames and you can trade them in as used games and they will give you a credit so you can buy a new game (or used) and both stores give a decent amount of credit for each game traded in. Some cool games for the PS2 out right now are Medal of Honor: Front Line, Gran Turismo 3, Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and all of them are priced around $20 now. The ultimate game on the PS2 though now is Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
//what does this thing play besides PS2 games?// This system plays regular DVD movies (no DVD-R/RW as this system came out in 2000 and does not have the capability) CD-R/RW's (no MP3 discs, suprisingly it does not have that capability either) Playstation 1 games, which you are in luck if you have a PSone.
It has a decent DVD player built into it but it will not replace a good stand alone dvd player. It does not have progressive scan in it, but the new Slim PS2 has that feature.
I have had some issues with my PS2, it broke down as soon as the 90 day waranty expired. It stopped reading discs and made a terrible loud grinding sound, so I had to send it in to get fixed. It's been working fine ever since and occasionally I get a "disc read error" message but all I do is reset it or take disc out and put it back in and it's fine.
Even though I had so issues with my PS2, I still really like it my PS2 and would reccomend it to anyone teen or adult. I would not reccomend it to younger kids as it may be a bit to complicated and games are a bit more violent then say a system like the Nintendo Gamecube. It still beats Xbox in my book, although Xbox is cool too, especially since it has Halo and some other cool games. But the Playstation 2 rules them all!
Good Luck with your decision!
