The Amazing World of Digital Photography

The Bottom Line View images instantly. No need to spend money on film. Ability to e-mail your photos almost immediately to friends and family or post them on the web.

I'm the proud owner of a single lens reflex camera and I had never used a digital camera before until one of my co-workers bought one, a Sony Mavica, which uses regular diskettes, and was kind enough to let me try it. At first I was a bit intimidated by all the controls and buttons. I had no idea what they were for, they're totally different from a normal camera except for the the button you press to take the actual picture. I had a little trouble at first learning how to delete or even view a picture I had just taken but with a bit of practice I did learn and soon I was taking picture after picture.

That day there was a street fair right next block to my job, with food booths, jewelry, clothes, etc., and I took this opportunity to try my hand at this new medium.

I loved the fact that I could see the "finished" product instantly, without having to wait days or even weeks to develop the film with the old fashioned camera. I was also amazed at the accuracy of the colors and sharpness of the images, very, close to real life, while with the film you're at the mercy of the light - not enough exposure and you get a very dark picture, too much and the picture looks washed out. Also, I loved the fact that I was able to delete any picture I didn't like. Imagine all the money you could save in developing costs if you could be able to do that with the regular film! One drawback with the disks is that I had to carry around a lot of them, since in order to take a good picture you have to use a high resolution setting or your image will look muddy, without clear definition, therefore you can only store about six high resolution images per disk (about 1280 900). A 480 by 640 resolution is ok but if you post them on the web their quality is going to suffer resulting in loss of detail.

One annoying drawback is the delay from the time you press the button to take the picture to the time it actually records it, resulting sometimes in extraneous objects or people in the picture. Nothing is perfect, I guess. One consolation: you can always delete the unwanted picture!

Another big plus with a digital camera is that you can e-mail your pictures almost immediately to your friends and family, or at least as soon as you have access to a computer and Internet provider. Also, you can post them on the Internet just as fast, without having to scan any prints, which takes a lot of time.

All in all digital photography is great but I still prefer the rich color rendition of my photos when it comes to post them on the Internet, although I would like to own a digital camera for those occasions when I want to share my photos with my friends instantly. The prices are still a bit stiff but they're falling. I hope to be able to afford it some day.
