The Bottom Line So many to choose from, get the info here before you buy.

I'd thought I would start off by posting my previous review of Playstation 2, so our readers can get a feel of the system. After that I will breakdown every accessory released by Sony and the third party developers.

Sony's Playstation 2

Originally I had asked for a new stereo system, but instead for Christmas I received a flashy new Playstation 2. I was quite excited partly because I was surprised and I was the first in my grade to get my grubby little meat hooks on one. I set up the Sony Entertainment system as soon as I could pry open the blue box.

I hooked the unit up with no problem, like any other system. I couldn't wait to pop in Madden 2001. I was amazed by the incredible visuals, but my amazement was short lived. The first two games I got were Madden 2001 and Espn nba 2 Night, okay they were great while they lasted.

But as the days went on, the dust started accumulating on top of my unit. The sports games are the only ones worth while, the rest of the launch games are horrible. I am amazed after 3 months that there has been no major improvements in the games. Although some may look good, most were rushed into production and thrown on the shelves.
I became very dissapointed and still am.

It was so bad that I began playing Playstation one games on it. I have been playing Tony Hawk and Mat Hoffman every chance I get, because there is not one game released on PS2 that has caught my attention. Hopefully, Gran Turismo 3: A Spec, Tony Hawk 3, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy X, Smackdown 3 will bring some of my original excitement for the machine back into my little heart. But what sucks is that the games I mentioned won't be released until the winter of 2001.

Now it is time for the DVD player. Most bought PS2 for this feature only. And boy were they upset when they saw the playback. The color fades in and out when your watching movies, no it is not your tv. And there are so many choppy scenes with blocks running across the screen. It's amazing they can brag about the DVD feature when it does not deliver.

Just one more negative to go before I get to the few positives. Once again Sony went with the 2 port controller panel. When will they realize the value of the multiplayer feature. They should have just added two more freakin' ports. Now we have to buy a special multitap for $34.99. And that is another thing, this "dream machine" will cost you endless amounts of money. Your memory cards from PSone can't be used to save PS2 games, your lucky PS2 supports PSone games and controllers. It was simply over hyped. Gamers and retailers made it sound like the Playstation 2 was going to do your chores, go to school for you, AND walk the dog! Ofcourse it did none of those things.

::Sigh:: On to the positives. Allright, the graphics are awesome. I must give credit where it is due. The playstation one playback is also a nice little feature. But seriously, that is about it. Hell, even Dreamcast is better! Dreamcast is only $99, and comes with one game. The graphics are just as good and there are so many great games. Especially RPG's. Also Dreamcast can go online right out of the box, unlike PS2 who has yet to reveal it's online power. Once the new systems come out, PS2 will be done and over with, unless the huge blockbuster titles I listed above save it. Then we will see who the king of the consoles is!

Memory Card
The memory card enables gamers to save data directly onto a chip in the card rather than saving it on the system itself. PSone has a 1mb card, PS2 has an 8mb storage capacity which will keep you busy for a while. You shouldn't have to buy more than 1 or 2 cards, it is amazing how much 8mb can save. I have nearly 4 games saved on my card as we speak. The card is designed with a sleek black color to match the unit.
$34.99

Dual Shock 2
New Playstation 2 controller features the Dual Shock vibration system with 2 joysticks, and 2 keypads. Many buttons for fireing and fighting. Fits nicely into gamers hand, personally I find it just a little too small. (Yes, I have big hands.)
$34.99
Third Party Controllers
There are so many I figure I would throw them all into one category. Dual Impact, Dual Impact 2, Dual Force and Dual Force 2. All of these controllers are pretty similar to each other and nearly identical to the licensced Dual Shock 2 controller. Except these are bigger, klunky and the buttons aren't all that smooth.
$20 - 30

Arcade Stick
Viper has issued an awesome arcade stick for Playstation 2. It is designed with great percision. It is a chrome color with large buttons duplicating the ones on a PS2 controller. It is a great addition if you currently own any of the fighting titles like: DOA Hardcore 2, Tekken... etc.
$65

Multitap
This little box enables up to 10 players. It plugs directly into a controller port, the other controllers are then plugged into the box. Who in the world has 10 controllers is beyond me , but I guess tell all your buddies to each bring over a controller. Many games are multiplayer enabled, sports games esspecially.
$34.99

DVD Remotes
There are so many to choose from. It is not really necessary as you can control the DVD player with a Playstation controller. But hey, the remotes glow! All have functions for the DVD and TV, and some even come wireless.
$14.99

Horizontal Stand
A $10 dollar piece of plastic, huh? This has to be the most useless accessory to date. It simply is a slice of plastic that goes under your Playstation unit. It holds the console up and elevates it about a half inch off the surface. This piece is really not neccesary.
$10

Vertical Stand
The Playstation licensced stand is just a small piece of plastic that holds the unit verticaly in the center. The plastic is strong and has a blue tint. It enables one to hold their Playstation vertically, and there is no problem with the CD drive either. Playstation made the drive have a slight indent so the CD's won't fall out. The vertical stand will run you around $15.

I am not sure why anyone would buy these accessories, maybe to fit the unit into a small spot? I don't know but I wouldn't recommend either because you can stand the console upright or horizontally without these ground breaking pieces of plastic.

There you have it, reviews on each and every accessory currently available for the PS2, please make wise choices and don't get fooled into buying any uneccesary merchandise. Also as always, the licsenced merchandise is of better quality, but in most cases third party products will do just fine.
