Pros: Lovely music, appealing melodies, great use of unusual words...
Cons: One forced song, definitely not for everybody...

...that you like this, you should go out to www.blueprintmusic.com and check out their material. It's fabulous, and I think you'll really enjoy it. Plus, I grew up with the lead vocalist, Katie, so I can guarantee she's not just studio material...her voice really does sound that good.

Nice review.

Indeed--it sounds purposeful and as though production (but not too much) was done. It's quaint and cute and weird and cool all at the same time but not under- or over-produced.

Haven't heard the Moldy Peaches albums, but I can comment that this is finely produced and worth checking out if it strikes you.

I saw the Moldy Peaches in concert two years ago, opening for They Might Be Giants, and thought they were completely adorable - dressed in bizarre, colorful clothes and singing about crushes as if they were the end of the world, and sex and crack as if they meant nothing but a random giggle or ten. The only singing voice i remember clearly is Kimya's (hey, _I_ don't crush on cute boys), and i was warned away from the band's album: my friend Cortney, who is a Ween fan of all things, still thought the Moldy Peaches's perfomances were of unacceptable sound/performance quality.

Which i guess leaves the question: does Gemstones sound at all professional? Not much, perhaps, but a little?

curiously,

Great review and all,but personally I cannot say a nice thing about this guy. I caught him live supporting the Babyshambles, and was actually blown away with how bad a live gig could actually be.
I thought I was the only one, until I saw the same band again, and when the singer for one of the support acts came on stage, he looked a hell of a lot like Green, and someone declared "it's that f*cking strokes reject again" cue almost the entire venue throwing every and anything they can at this guy on stage, before realising it wasn't actually Adam Green, it was definitely one of the most amusing things I've seen at a gig, but couldn't help but feel sorry for the guy.

Still, you back up why you like him, and it's always nice that everyone has someone to support them, and Green is lucky he has you.

I'm a huge Adam Green fan, but I've heard bad things about this album. You've convinced me that I should still check it out though... so great job! By the way, I thought I'd share my all-time favorite Adam Green line, from Garfield's Mozzarella Swastikas:

Gonna go to the graveyard
Get some thinking done
Gonna dig up Megan
And cut out my son

Sick and twisted? Yeah. Disturbing? Possibly. But there's just something about that line... as morbid as it sounds, when he sings it, it just sounds sweet somehow. I'm glad you like his album.
