| dlstewart's Full Review: Rubbermaid Servin Saver Rectangular Food Storage C... |
Originally I purchased the Rubbermaid Servin Saver Rectangular Storage Container to hold free eating utensils that a book club kept sending me. I didnt request the forks, spoons and knives ... but there they were in my mailbox. I needed something to store them in. While at the pharmacy I saw this Rubbermaid rectangular container (Model # 4021). On an impulse buy, two of them came home with me.
Description
This container is plastic with clear sides and a white lid. It measures 9" x 6 3/8" x 3 1/2" deep. The underside of the container has an 1/8" deep rim that nests into the recessed top of another of these containers so that they stack. When the cover is removed and set flat (either right-side up or upside down), the bottom of the container neatly nests on the lid.
Rubbermaid designed this container with rounded sides. A lip is located about a 1/2" from the top of the container. This lip is about 3/8" wide and runs around the entire top of the plasticware. At each of the rounded corners, the lip curves inward toward the container so that there are no pointy corner edges.
The white lid has an extension tab at one corner. The way the container is designed, no matter which way the lid is placed on the container, that extension tab is easy to grab. It acts as a finger-hold to pry the lid from the container.
Rubbermaid Model # 4021 will hold 1.9 Quarts. The manufacturer says it is microwave reheatable, can go in the freezer, and is top-rack dishwasher safe.
My Experiences
Impulse purchases sometimes dont work out well. Dont get me wrong ... these are great containers! However, the free knives I received were too long to fit inside. Even placing the knives on a diagonal did not work well. I decided not to place the forks and spoons in the container since I wanted the set to remain together.
Im not one to let something go to waste. One container found its way into my food container drawer. On occasion, it holds salad that goes with me to work. More often leftovers find their way into it, such as the salmon casserole remains from the other evening. I have never stored anything with a tomato base that might stain the container.
The lid snaps firmly into place. I can turn the container upside down and the lid stays in position. This makes it ideal for travel. But there is a downside to using this as a traveling lunch container. It is bulky. I have other Rubbermaid containers that are flatter and easier to carry.
Is it water tight? I did an experiment ... daring person that I am. I filled this container with water, sealed the lid, making sure it was tight, then turned the container upside down over the sink. When no water leaked, I held the container over the kitchen floor. The seal held. No water dripped. No need for a mop, not even a paper towel.
Even though the manufacturer says this container is safe for both freezer and microwave, I have not used it in either. The same goes for the dishwasher. I do not place any of my Rubbermaid plasticware in a dishwasher. I hand wash everything with Dawn dishwashing liquid. The containers easily clean.
Ah ... but what happened to the other Rubbermaid container? It sat on the shelf, waiting to leap into action. And the day came when I needed it. I had a coupon for Dove Essential Nutrients Cleansing Pillows (for cleaning the face). So I purchased a box of 28 pillows to try. Each pillow measures 3" x 2" and did not come in a resealable container. Enter the Rubbermaid rectangular Servin Saver. The containers 3 1/2" depth worked well. It neatly held all 28 pillows. Since the seal is so tight on the this container, I keep the cleansing pillows under the sink in the bathroom. I have had no trouble with moisture getting into the container.
Purchasing
I purchased these Rubbermaid containers at my local pharmacy for $3.99 each. If you cannot find them locally, Do It Bests online store (www.doitbest.com) sells this container for $4.59.
Summary
For an impulse purchase, these two containers have worked out well. Its great to own a container that is versatile and helps keep my food ... and beauty products ... organized!
I hope you have found this review useful.
Enjoy your day,
Dawn
