Benho is correct...it would be more accurate to say that millions of dollars are spent on research on each drug. I stated hundreds of thousands simply because if I had gone with the higher number someone would inevitably point out a drug that came out years ago with a low cost of R&D.

nice message you are getting out to people. one nice thing hmos do, is that since they care about the costs of things, they force doctors to prescribe generics. traditional health insurance plans let doctors prescribe whatever they want, which is why people often still buy the more costly name brand.
one quibble:
"The drug company that originally produced the drug has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to research the drug"
hudnreds of thousands would barely cover the cost of one researcher. millions if not tens or hundreds of millions would be more accurate.
