General Power Mower Maintenance
Jun 25 '01
The Bottom Line Lawn mower maintenance can save you a lot of money, now and later.
I do NOT cover engine maintenance in this article.
In order to get the most out of your lawn mower you should perform these general maintenance procedures, at least once a month.
Check the blade
A well kept blade will save you time mowing the lawn because you can cut faster. A sharp blade cuts grass faster and easier than a dull one. If you have noticed that when the grass is growing back after a cut the edges are brown and ‘fuzzy’ it’s time to have the blade sharpened. You can do it yourself by using a sharpening stone, but a grinding wheel is faster. A sharp blade will make your lawn look much healthier.
Check the oil
Just like a car, lawn mowers need oil to operate smoothly. Making sure you have the right amount of oil will ensure proper engine function.
Check nuts and bolts
As we all know the lawn mowers vibrate heavily. This may cause some nuts and bolts to become lose, which may lead to them falling out. While not a great threat, it is better to err on the side of caution.
Check Cables
Make sure your cables are operating smoothly. If a cable’s shield has worn, replace it. I once had a mower on which the throttle cable shield had busted. I could increase the RPMs but not lower them, which ended up making large clouds of dust whenever I would walk over the place in my yard without grass.
Please keep in mind that there are more things you can do to your lawn mower to keep it in the best of health. I have provided these tips as a list of things that should be checked every month (or 4 trips to the lawn.)
