| captaind's Full Review: Sony Ericsson K700i |
The Sony Ericsson K700i is an excellent phone for anyone who wants a phone capable of more than just the basic features. It took a while to prise it away from my wife (well after all it is her phone!) long enough to be able to write this review!
It's a little larger than many modern phones but the look is sleek and stylish. Instead of cursor keys it uses a small paddle for controlling access to menus etc, which I don't particularly like the operation is fiddly at first and even after a while still seems cumbersome, also I have read in other reviews that the paddle becomes less responsive after a time. Still, it's my wife's phone not mine and she says that she's quite happy with it after taking a short time to get used to it, so I guess it's a matter of personal preference. Each paddle direction acts as a shortcut from the initial menu screen, though remembering what each does can be a challenge! Unfortunately
At initial start-up you are asked if you want to transfer the SIM's memory to the phone or vice versa (this can be done at any time if you choose not to do it first time round), which is an excellent feature and can save a lot of time over phones where you have to manually copy phone numbers or copy each one individually on the phone as it has no bulk transfer options.
The display and sound capabilities are excellent. The screen is bigger than most and boasts a 65K colour display. (The only slight problem with this is that it's easier for the bigger screen to get grease marks etc on it.) This phone has the capability to download and play MP3 format songs, which is nice, and the sound quality both on the inbuilt radio and calls is crystal clear. (Although you have to have the headphones in for the radio to work, as these also contain the antenna, you can set the radio to play through the speaker. Since the speaker's fairly powerful, this is a very good feature.) The camera also has many useful and fun features, such as being able to select a frame for your photo. The image quality is excellent for a camera phone and, while there is no flash, there is a "night mode", which works far more effectively than the equivalent feature on Nokia phones I've used. There are 4 choices as to image size. You may think you'll run out of memory if you take a lot of photos, but you'd be wrong this phone comes with a whopping 41Mb!
Message handling is also very good. If you for any reason are unable to send a message, it automatically saves this so that you can try again later, and when browsing sent items it places a tick against each one that has already been successfully sent. There's also the ever-helpful "Delete All" option. The only slight drawback are the limited email option, but a future model will correct this. It's also a nice feature that you can assign several different numbers to each contact.
The phone also Bluetooth enabled. Doesn't make much difference to me, but some people will find that important!
Accessories
The phone only comes with the hands-free headset, so you may be disappointed if you were looking for heaps of extras.
Overall
Overall the Sony EricssonK700i excels in many ways and, where it falls down slightly, it's only in minor things. With the superb display and sound, along with a good range of feature and a massive memory, this one's most definitely a winner.
