I researched the cameras I wanted via the Internet. I decided that the FZ20 from Panasonic was the camera for me. I wanted the more traditional black because everyone else seems to be into silver. Thank you Panasonic for giving me a choice!
On a Wednesday afternoon, I phoned the two New York mail-order retailers with the lowest price. The first said that they did not have the FZ-K which is in black but only had the FZ-S silver! They told me that black was not available at all from the manufacturer. The second vendor said yes they had it in black. They would not sell it without their high priced accessory package. I finally agreed to this package. Then we went around the bend for 25 minutes while the guy tried to sell me a three-year warranty. It first started out as $229. Then he would throw in an extra battery if I bought it now. When he couldn’t sell me that he lowered the price to $199 and would throw in a lightweight collapsible tripod. I told him I had a tripod. I asked him if he wanted to sell the camera or not. “Oh Yes” he said but continued with the warranty sales pitch. The price was down to $119 with the battery and I said “No”. I asked “Do you want to sell me the camera or not”? He placed me on hold several times when supposedly talking with his supervisor. He said he couldn’t sell me the camera without the warranty. I said fine. Thank you very much and hung up.
My next call was to Butterfly Photo. When I talked to the sales person I said I would not tell him anything about myself unless he wanted to sell me a camera with no strings attached. No warranties and only the accessories I wanted. I told him about my previous two calls. He said he would only sell me what I wanted. So we proceeded. I said I wanted an extra battery and a 512megabyte card. He said it would be much cheaper to buy the advanced accessory package which included the 512 chip, battery, a great Samsonite case, cleaning kit and tabletop tripod. I said go ahead and ship it via the 5 to 7 day FedEx. The price was almost $140 cheaper and included the battery and camera bag which the other vendor did not include. And no warranty sales pitch! The call was done in 3 minutes. A person phoned back in 10 minutes to confirm my MasterCard payment. An email arrived in a half hour later with shipping confirmation details. The camera arrived Friday afternoon. Thanks FedEx!
