Yeah, I guess you're right. You know another one that is kind of hokey but is still pretty good is the Audie Murphy story - To Hell and Back. The book was great also.

I'll give you two out of three there. See my review of Zulu Dawn as to why I won't be adding it to Zulu on this list.

I agree Stone is not one of my favourites either. Platoon makes this list mainly on the performances of Dafoe and Berenger, and the realism captured by Dale Dye the military technical advisor.
Patton and Lawrence of Arabia are more suited to a 10 greatest epics I feel especially the later for it's sheer scope.

...the choices on your list, I mean. And I agree with 'em all, save one. I never cared for Platoon, I suppose because I never cared much for anything by Oliver Stone.
In the place of Platoon, I would choose Das Boot. A bit over-long, but a real nail-biter throughout!! Also one of the great anti-war films of all time.
Other worthy contenders on my list: Patton, Lawrence of Arabia, and Schindler's List.
Great review, as always!!

All of your choices are great movies. I like "Battleground" and "Das Boot" but I can always take my turn another day. I saw "The Dogs of War" when it came out. Good movie but the book is even better. Thanks again.

I'll give you one out of two there Doc. Sands was excellent. The other one however would only make my top 10 most poorly edited, 10 ten most confusing, or top 10 National Geographic specials trying to pretend to be war movies lists. That is unless you're talking about the original with Keir Dullea. That's a totally different matter.

Like I noted Jack this was an old review. After it I rediscovered Dogs of War and went on my rave. Besides one of the reasons I had to move it into this catagory was to make room for my new upcoming review, "10 BEST BLOWED UP REAL GOOD MOVIES".

George, re Gloria , did you mean the original, or the remake with Sharon Stone. I kind of lean towards the latter myself.

Essays Are Hell... (Reply to this comment)

Nice list, James. I'd begin spouting off things like.."Man, where's Sands Of Iwo Jima", or,"Man, what about The Thin Red Line." But, I'll leave that for the stupified, wandering sole who forgets the fact that this is your top 10 list and not the official list of American movie-goers everywhere. I'll just sit back and give you your propers for "Zulu". That's a new one and worthy of note.

DrJ

Tom, yeah I've seen it. A good example of the HBO type cable movies whose quality rivals the "big" movies. Covers the Battle of the Huertegen Forest. A disaster in the making, a frontal assault on the German Siegfried Line that ranks up there with Dieppe and The Somme as acts of military stupidity.

When Trumpets Fade. A WWII film with a Twilight Zone feel. Very realistic battle scenes. Story about a squad of U.S. soldiers penetrating the Nazi line in the final months of the war.
Was shot in the Czech Republic a few years (4 or 5) ago. Saw it on video, then bought the DVD. Best war movie I've seen in years. Better than Thin Red Line or Hamburger Hill.
