The Bottom Line Children need to select their own entertainment. If they are taught good judgement they will be alright.

Television today is vastly different from what I grew up on. I remember when my father bought our first TV in the fifties. It was a small round screen black and white piture. We had the only TV on the street and I remember all the neighbors coming over to see it. Before that we listened to the radio or played games and went to bed early. Families talked and knew each other and what was going on in your life. When TV came we sat around much like today and let the TV entertain us. Everything changed after that. Life was centered around what to watch on the "boob tube".

What I let my children watch when thay were growing up, was whatever they wanted to watch. It's not the TV that shapes their life but what they see and learn form your example of the way you live. I can see myself in my daughters and son every day. And I am proud of the way they take care of their spouses, homes, and their children. I am proud of the way my grandchildren are being taught. I see my grandchildren watching TV and understanding that it is entertainment and not real life. Maybe that's the key. TV is NOT real but only make believe. I can see how easy it could be to get absorbed in the program and become part of the story, especially with all the special effects that are used.

When I watched TV in the fifties it was Hopalong Cassidy, The Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers, The Cisco Kid etc. Night time was I Love Lucy, The Milton Berle Show Etc. Violence was cowboys using real guns shooting people. No sex ever, and no swear words ever. Life was different but NOT better. I will never say that.

What should your children watch on TV? That's up to you. Just remember to teach them that real life is different from TV. Television is entertainment only, NOT examples of the way we should live our life or the way to think. People have to live with common sense and good morals. If we teach our children right from wrong and to live with respect for others television will be viewed as entertainment which is what is was origionally intended to be.

Setting time for television is a good thing. After homework and after the family dinner is good. Younger children need more entertainment for your sanity so cartoons are perfect any time. Just remember time to read to them and play with them. Talking to your children is a must.

If you don't get bent out of shape over the TV your child won't either.
