I wanna be unusual... I wanna be punk rock!

The Bottom Line Here are some punk bands that I like. It's pretty straight forward.
Punk has been around since the 70's. It became part of my life around the time Green Day released Dookie. I wasn't very old then, but I was old enough to listen to music and appreciate it. In my town, punk was a fad. It changed quickly. But, being a kid, I had no idea what happened and kept listening to my old Dookie tape. All my little friends made fun of me because I didn't listen to Offspring (which in my opinion stunk back then). After that day, I swore off punk music until the Internet and Napster came into my life.
Napster gave me a whole new perspective on music. I downloaded all kinds of music, but very little punk. A friend then pushed me towards Guttermouth's Lipstick, and so on. Now, punk is ALL I listen to. I decided that for the purpose of this epinion, I would run down my favorite punk bands, and pass the record of four bands the other writers have written about.
- The Ramones
Duh! The grandfathers of punk rock. I'm not a huge fan and I don't have a cult following, but damn if that ain't great music. Punk without angst, screaming and over-the-top swearing.
Best Songs: I Wanna be Sedated, Teenage Lobotomy, The KKK Took My Baby Away and so much more...
-Goldfinger
Whilst technically ska punk, Goldfinger rock hard and you know it. (Or don't, in which case I advise you to read this epinion.) Their sound is mostly ska if you look at the earlier albums, but the last album, Stomping Ground, has a more definite punk sound to it.
Best Songs: 99 Red Balloons, If Only, Question, This Lonely Place, Pick A Fight, Margaret Ann, Disorder
-Guttermouth
Punk with hard edges and guitar riffs, the kind of music that people call "noise". Great tunes and especially, great lyrics. How many people can boast that they wrote a song about their mother's sexual encounter with a donkey in Mexico?
Best Songs: Lipstick, Perfect World, Lucky The Donkey, Baker's Dozen, Do The Hustle
-Sum 41
Rather new Canadian punk band. They only have one album out but their songs are extremely catchy. Not too bad, but they have to drop the Beasties Boys shtick right now.
Best Songs: Fat Lip, Makes No Difference, Pain For Pleasure
-NOFX
Been out there a while, and their stuff still sounds great. Typical white-guy with a whiny voice punk, with some catchy tunes, good riffs and nice lyrics.
Best Songs: Bob, Don't Call Me White, I Want You To Want Me, The Decline
-No Use For A Name
Not incredibly noisy and even a tad melodious at times. Their stuff still remains top-notch.
Best Songs: Turning Japanese, Room 19, Pride
-Pennywise
Another band that's been around for a while. Quite similar to NOFX, if you think about it, if somewhat less screechy. They're the ones between the infamous Stand by Me cover.
Best Songs: Bro Hym Tribute, Fight Till You Die, many expert covers
-Me First And The Gimmie Gimmies
You know all those songs you hum all day but never admit to liking because they're by, say, Neil Diamond? Well, MFATGG covers them with a punk edge. They have three albums out: one on the 60's, one on the 70's-80's and one covering the best Broadway musical songs.
Best Songs: Country Roads, The Boxer, Leaving On A Jet Plane, Blowin' In The Wind, Who Put The Bomp
-Gob
Canadian punk band. They have about half a dozen albums out. They're quite young and I've seen them on TV saying that punk isn't all about playing really fast. I Hear You Calling is a good example of that.
Best Songs: I Hear You Calling, Paint It Black, Soda, For The Moment
-A New Found Glory
I read a review of their album in Rolling Stone, and I must say they were pretty harsh. A new Found Glory may not be revolutionary, but the stuff they put out is consistently solid. Notable for covering a lot of uncoverable stuff (Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On, Backstreet Boys' I Want It That Way).
Best Songs: The Glory Of Love, Better Off Dead, Hit Or Miss, I Want It That Way
-Less Than Jake
Ska punk. Lots of trumpets, even in the fast-paced songs and a decidedly talented lead singer. For some freaky, unexplained reason, they covered all the songs from Grease.
Best Songs: Boring Town, Summer Nights, Dopeman, Jen Doesn't Like Me Anymore
-Flogging Molly
Bagpipes and flutes aren't punk, right? Wrong. Flogging Molly is Irish punk in the purest sense of the word. Songs made for jigging turned into songs for moshing. I have no words to qualify how cool they are.
Best Songs: Salty Dog, Rebels Of The Sacred Heart, Devil's Dance Floor, Every Dog Has Its Day
-Reel Big Fish
Technically speaking, RBF play ska and only ska, but ska is a part of punk nonetheless. Similar to Goldfinger in their early years. (As a matter of fact they tour together.)
Best Songs: Beer, Up The Junction (w/ Goldfinger), Sell Out, Take on Me
-Millencolin
I might have spelled it wrong. They touch in many aspects of the genre. Some songs are emo, some songs are ska. I have to disagree, however, with ex-member Orestes84 who said no one really likes them. I do, not that it matters anyhow.
Best Songs: Story of My Life, No Cigar, Fox
-Lagwagon
I used to get these guys confused with Millencollin or Less Than Jake. (I have no idea why.) They're not singularly very ground-breaking, but I like some of their songs.
Best Songs: May 16, Brown Eyed Girl, Sleep
-Anti-Flag
Hardcore political punk. I usually can't figure out what the singer is saying, but it usually has some kind of political connotation. They really hate the government.
Best Songs: Zapatista Don't Give Up, Die For Your Government, A New Kind Of Army
-Fenix TX
Poppy enough to have ended up on TRL. Sort of nauseating, really. Compare them to other pop punk bands like Blink 182, A New Found Glory and The Ataris, and they come up on top. The singer has a really unique voice, too.
Best Songs: Surf Song, Minimum Wage, Jolly Green Dumbass
-The Dickies
As suggested by dastr8poop, I checked out The Dickies. I can't say I fell heads over heels in love with them, but they're pretty funny. Think The Ramones meets Guttermouth's silliness.
Best Songs: Stukas Over Disneyland, Silent Night, Paranoid, Howdy Doody In The Woodshed
And Others...
These songs come from bands I don't particularly like or know much about.
Diesel Boy- Titty Twister
Ignite- A Place Called Home
Dropkick Murphys- Barroom Hero
Tsunami Bomb- Take The Reins
Face to Face- Walk The Walk
Alkaline Trio- Radio
Die Toten Hosen- Hier Kommt Alex (if anyone knows what this means, could you please tell me?)
Pulley- Second Best
Ghoti Hook- Earth Angel
Strung Out- Mind Of My Own
