I like to try new household scent products and air fresheners. I wanted to try this product for quite awhile, but the price threw me off a bit. I waited until they were on sale, and then I purchased two Scentstories units. The regular price for them at my local supermarket is nearly $35.
Scentstories is an air freshener that works differently than other air fresheners. It looks like a CD player, but it plays scents instead of music. Each disc runs for 2.5 hours, and contains 5 different scents. Every thirty minutes, a new scent starts up. The discs are reuseable, but you have to replace them every so often- they are supposed to last for 20 plays on high intensity (50 hours)
Replacement discs cost about $5.99 each at my local stores.
I brought the two units home, and set them up. Other than having a hard time getting them out of the plastic packaging, they were super easy to get set up. Just plug it in and pop a disc in. One thing was a bit confusing- the packaging on the discs says to pull the foil out and then remove a plastic tab. I looked and looked and couldn't find a plastic tab to remove. I put the disc in anyway, and it worked fine. I later found out that there is no plastic tab to remove, the directions on the package are incorrect.
I put one unit in our large finished basement, and the other in my living room. My living room is quite large, but the basement is really big and runs the full length of our house. Each unit included a disc called "Exploring a Mountain Trail" and those were the discs I tried first. The Scentstories units have three different intensity units you can choose from. I put both units on the highest intensity level.
In my living room, I placed the unit on an end table on the far side of the room. Within minutes, the room was completely scented. Not too strong, but definitely noticeable. The scent stays in the living room, and I can't smell it if I am in the hallway off of the living room or in another room on the same floor. But as soon as you walk in the living room, you can smell it. I like strongly scented potpourri and air fresheners, so this is perfect for me.
In the large finished basement, I placed the unit on an end table that is sort of in the middle of the room. The unit does scent the entire basement, but not as strongly as it does in the smaller living room. Still, it is much more effective than any of the plug-in room scents I had been using.
I have tried different discs. The first ones I tried were the "Exploring a Mountain Trail" ones that came with the units. I did like those discs, although a couple of the scents were kind of antiseptic smelling like a household cleaner. I liked that disc better in the basement than in the living room, probably because it doesn't go well with the cozy feel of my living room.
My favorite disc is "Strolling through the Garden", especially the "Picking Peachy Freesias" and the "Among the Roses" scents. The scents are so nice, and don't smell as artificial as you would think.
I have also used the "Wandering Barefoot on the Shore" disc. That one if kind of light and breezy smelling, which is what I expected.
The "Shades of Vanilla" disc is very relaxing, I think. The scents on this disc are all vanilla scents, and they all pretty much smell the same to me. With the other discs, I can tell from across the room which scent is playing, but with this one I just smell vanilla. If I had a scentstories machine in my kitchen, I would play this disc all the time. It does smell very yummy!
My least favorite disc is "Relaxing in the Hammock" I don't dislike this disc, but I am not crazy about the scents on it. I also think the scents on this disc are not as strong as the other discs, and it isn't as effective as the others.
Each disc is supposed to work for 20 plays (50 hours) on high intensity, which is what I have my units set to. In my experience, that is about right. I do notice that after the 15th play or so that the scent really starts to become less noticeable.
I am very happy with my Scentstories units! I am thinking about purchasing a few more for our bedrooms. I do think that the discs are a bit expensive, especially since I use them so frequently that I need to purchase two new ones every week. Since they are almost $6 a disc, that is almost $12 a week I am spending on Scentstories. That makes me think a bit each week when I am putting them in my shopping cart, but I love them so much I keep buying them.
