| bnlitin's Full Review: Magnepan MG1.6 QR Speaker |
The Magnepan 1.6QR are fantastic speakers and I can see now why people rave about them. I bought them after listening to lots of dynamic (box) speakers. After listening to Maggies, I could never enjoy the box sound any more.
Vocals, guitars, sound absolutely fantastic. Like all speakers, you really have to audition them.
The pluses are:
-great high end extension
-midrange to die for...great for vocals- strings- jazz- piano- classical music and anything "unplugged" or accoustic
-soundstage is wide and deep
The minuses are:
- weak bass
- placement sensitive
- very tall
- require lots of power
I auditioned many other box speakers, but after listening to Maggies, I couldn't stand the box sound. The 1.6R are definitely better then MMGs (and I'm now using MMGs as surround speakers). The sound is clear and precise with a large sweet-spot.
The MG1.6s do not have strong bass, so I augment them with an SVS 20-39CS subwoofer for movies. Both SVS and REL subwoofers work very well with Maggies.
I am using a Parasound HCA-2205A (300W/channel into 4 Ohms) power-amp to drive these speakers and the love a lot of power.
While you can power the Maggies with a receiver, I used RXV-995, for a while, the bass becomes much stronger with a dedicated power amp like the Parasound or Bryston.
