Nice review (Reply to this comment)

However, I don't believe that there has really been a concious decision on the band's part to return to any sort of "alternative roots" with their more recent records. Personally, I think it's a combination of them probably feeling like they have nothing more to prove creatively or commercially, combined with the fact that the band is (and this comes from me being a HUGE fan) clearly past their prime. I personally think that they've always done things their way, and I really don't think that they ever *truly* pandered to the massess. For a long time they just created one fantastic album after another.

I love R.E.M. (Reply to this comment)

They're one of the few bands where I can get into pretty much any of their songs. I just might be getting this one.

...is probably one of my favourite R.E.M. songs. I was pleasantly surprised to see it on this "best of" collection.
I would have liked to have seen Shiny Happy People there though (yes, its the cheesy side coming out...)
Great review, as always.

Nope, no "Crush W/Eyeliner"...damn near NOTHING from "Monster", which I think still holds up as a great album...I'd have liked to see "Bang & Blame", "Strange Currencies" or "Let Me In" on here than some of the more recent stuff. Ah, well.
Nice job, Shelly--
