The Bottom Line Powerful concert given by a powerful guitarist. Even if you've never heard his music, check out a show; you won't be disappointed. But bring ear plugs.
I've had the magnificent chance to see Dick Dale in concert twice, and let me tell you, he rocks! The most recent time was November 4, 2000 at The Rock in Tucson Arizona. The club was small (pro) but there were two opening acts (con). I'm all about supporting local music but the two opening acts just didn't do it for me. I was there to see The King Of The Surf Guitar and not a punk or hardcore band. "Oh well.." I thought to myself; I'll just be that much more happy when Dick Dale takes the stage. After standing up for four hours to get through the opening band's setup and tear down, I was rather drained. It was raining outside and I didn't want to ride my motorcycle home in the cold November rain (sounds like a song I heard once...). Anyhow, when Dick Dale took the stage, or should I say 'attacked' the stage, I immediately forgot about my pounding eardrums or rain. This guy does not disappoint. And talk about stage presence. I've seen amazing guitarist that play phenomenally well, but just stand on the stage and just, well, play. Dick Dale, on the other hand, struts around, sings with feeling, and even walks through the audience! During "Mr. Peppermint Man" he walked down onto the dance floor while playing the solo. And check this out: The lead singer of one of the punk bands turned to my brother and said "We're not worthy!" when Dick Dale passed. Maybe they were not such a bad opening act after all. Too make a long, loud, fantastic, unimaginable story short, the concert was awesome. After the last song, Dick Dale hopped down on the stage and stayed until he talked to everyone and signed something. I got "Calling Up The Spirits" singed. He's so friendly and will talk about whatever you want. I had this great idea in my head about how I was going to approach him and tell him that he is amazing and I wish I could play like that and so and so on. But it was so wonderful when I met him that all I could manage was "You're awesome!" And you know what?... I didn't even mind ridding home in the rain. |
