| c3363's Full Review: Mohegan Sun |
Mohegan Sun Casino is located in Uncasville Connecticut. It is well known for it's gambling and its magnificant hotel. However, there is a lot more to do at the Mohegan Sun for those who want a break from gambling.
One of the best things about Mohegan Sun is that you can get a card, earn points (fairly quickly) and use those points in all of the shops, restaurants and even the hotel. Your points work just like cash and they are accepted everwhere in the casino including the spa.
The hotel is beautiful. It is made up of almost 100% glass windows. Inside it is wonderfully clean. There are about 12 elavators for hundreds of rooms so sometimes you can have a wait. You have to swipe your key in the elevator which can be a pain because it wasn't working right.
The rooms are some of the best I've ever been to. Two double beds, magnificant view of lakes, large TV, large bathroom with shower and tub, coffee maker with tons of different selections of coffee, there was also high speed internet, nintendo, and movie rentals in our room at an extra charge. You can call from any phone in the casino to your room at no charge. The rooms are extremely quiet and a great place to relax in.
There is a large, heated indoor pool with big changing and shower rooms, an exercise room and a full-service spa inside the hotel area of the casino.
The spa is great. You can visit the spa even it you aren't staying at the hotel. They have hair cuts, color, styling, manicures, pedicures, massages etc.
The Mohegan Sun has lots of shops and restaurants, here is a summary of some of the best.
Trailblazer-This is a sporting goods store. They sell snowboards, sneakers, jackets, shirts, fleeces, sunglasses, watches, boots, bookbags, hats etc. Average prices.
Odysea-This is a must-see on your visit. There is an enormous walkthrough tunnel aquarium loaded with tropical fish. Inside the store, there are tons of tanks with spectacular aquatic displays. Odysea sells aquatic themed gifts and some electronics and collectables. The prices in Odysea are inflated but remember to use your card as cash.
Discovery Store-This is just like any other discovery store. All the prices are basically the same so it's a good value for shopping.
Nostalgia-This store has all the merchandise that was popular 30-60 years ago. There are often displays in the window and some of the merchandise you will not ever see anywhere else.
Farmers Almanac-This store is one of my favorites. They sell all kinds of Country themed items. They are very fairly priced and they have tons of spices and some candy for sale. Lots of cooking utensils also. At Christmas time, they have tons of ornaments for sale.
Yankee Candle Company-Wonderful candles in every scent. Prices are a little steep.
Spinstreet-Electronic store. They have video games and systems, CDs DVDs books and a few collectables. The prices are a little high in this store.
Jaboola-This store has tons of unusual merchandise. All of there stuff is colorful and slightly abstract. It's a great place to buy unusual gifts.
Swarovski Crystal-Beautiful displays of crystals to purchase or just to admire.
An Oriental Shop-I love this shop because it's a great place to buy gifts at a very reasonable price.
Godiva Chocolate-This is a very expensive chocolate shop. But what do you expect for Godiva?
Boccelli-Handbags and purses. Prices seem a little steep here.
Sun Shoes-Fine shoes mostly for women.
There are also several American Indian stores and convenience shops around the building.
Kids Arcade- This arcade is great to drop your kids off. There is a program where you can drop little kids off in a supervised environment. There is a seperate arcade for older kids where you can buy coins for them and they can win prizes by collecting tickets from many different games. They also have arcade style rides which might be interesting for kids and teens.
There are many restaurants in Mohegan Sun. Some of my favorites are Ben and Jerry's, Fidelia's (American Cuisine)Johnny Rockets, Lucky's (Pizza), Sunburst (buffet) and the food courts. In the food courts you can find almost every type of food.
There are also many different places to take pictures. There is an enormous waterfall inside the building, countless wolf statues and American Indian related statues and a weird pond in the hotel lobby that looks like part of the floor.
I think that if there is one problem with the Mohegan Sun it is the food. I have yet to find a "good" restaurant. Most of them aren't even okay. This is one area that definitely needs improvement.
Another area is the lack of seating outside of the gambling areas. There are almost no benches.
If you are looking for something else to do while your there check out the concerts and events. Tons of popular bands and events come to the casino, and the Arena is great.
The Mohegan Sun is a clean, interesting place regardless if you gamble.
