greyhair's Full Review: Symantec Norton Internet Security 2003 (10024885) ...
Experience: My experience with Symantec / Norton AV has been generally good but I am now aware of an ongoing problem with the product and I may switch to an alternate.
Obtain: Symantec was shipped with the Dell laptop I bought for home use. It worked well for the first 3 months and so I renewed my subscription.
Likes: Over the time, it's performed reasonably well. LiveUpdates of virus, spyware, etc mitigants & signatures have worked without a hitch as have the addition of new features in the product. Also, the inbuilt AV heuristics combined with the speed of updates must be effective as we've not had any infections to date. Finally, I find Symantec's GUI easier to use - more intuitive - than the a competitor's product on the PCs at work.
Dislikes:
A few months ago, an AV update came through which trashed our ability to receive emails with the notice stating Outlook Express (OE) had deleted it. I wasted a lot of time on this for a couple of weeks until Symantec issued a fix via LiveUpdate and the problem "went away".
Now there is another serious problem. Symantec randomly deletes inbound emails with the useless notice "Symantec Email Proxy deleted the following email message". These are totally innocuous text-only emails. Worse, I run Win XP SP2 with a separate user account for each family member on this single laptop and we are all use same ISP for our email. I can send a single text-only email copied to 2 or 3 of us and Symantec will delete one (with the above useless notice) and let the others through. A good controlled test, don't you think?
Changing the options from "auto-clean" to "ask me" has no effect. And I'm not alone; this error has been on the web many months with no fix - just google on the delete notice. Worse, I have been to Symantec's website and tried to advise the support staff of this problem but the site gives me no facility for doing so, even though I am a bone-fide domestic service customer.
Could you imagine the mayhem which would result in a corporate environment where genuine, important emails are deleted in this manner? Or in the medical, emergency services, law enforcement or defence industries?
