Recently I made a nervous trip to San Diego to meet an on-line friend, a woman I'd been talking with for eight months on end but had not yet met in person. The timing of the trip on a long Valentine's-Day weekend was coincidental at first, but in hindsight was probably a good portent. We had such a nice time and came to adore each other so much that we decided to become a couple. (And we now remember the visit fondly as our five-day-long first date!)
So how to thank her from 1000 miles away? Well, flowers, of course.
My initial choice of on-line flower delivery service offered to ship flowers in a box by overnight mail. That didn't seem quite right to me. So I went to FTD.com next.
Ah, they read my mind. Right across the top of the page in the tab bar, I saw and clicked on "Deliver It Today!" Though it was already two days after Valentine's Day, they still offered some nice Valentine's-Day arrangements. On the very first page was a "Sweetheart's Bouquet"--several roses arranged with other flowers in a slender, contemporary vase--that I knew my new girlfriend would love. I picked that.
The bouquet was offered "as pictured" for $40, but a "deluxe" version was also available for $50, and a "premium" version for $60. I opted for the deluxe version. Oh, and there was a $12 delivery charge. Well, I probably could have paid that for overnight mail, anyway, I thought. And for same-day, in-person delivery, all the better.
While entering my billing information, I was asked for a frequent-flier plan number. Frequent-flier plan? I never thought to sign up for one. But as well as things worked out with my new sweetheart, I'd probably better consider one NOW, I thought. I quickly jumped over to my favorite airline's site and signed up, then came back to FTD.com and plugged in my frequent-flier number. Hey, 500 miles is nothing to sneeze at!
I placed my order at about 10 a.m. As promised by FTD.com, the flowers were delivered the same day. Unfortunately, I have no idea exactly what time they got there. My poor dear was sick that day, and when I was video-chatting with her on-line that night, I learned that she'd been in bed most of the day. She'd probably slept soundly enough to miss someone knocking on her door, I thought. I asked her to check outside. When she returned to her camera, the first thing I saw was the bouquet she was holding, looking even better than what I'd seen on-line. She loved it. The extra $10 had bought some added snapdragons, and it all looked wonderful.
I have to say that my FTD experience couldn't really have been better. And to a long week filled with happy memories, they added one more for us.
