Don't forget Studio Ghibli's animated classics (Reply to this comment)
by trovis
These have appeared only recently on the North American market, so their absence on your list is understandable, but at least two of Hayao Miyazaki's films are absolute gems for this demographic: "Kiki's Delivery Service", and "Whisper of the Heart". Of course his Academy Award-winning "Spirited Away " also has a teenage girl as the main character, but that's pretty heavy going for a slumber party. My own daughter also likes the most recent Ghibli offering, "Howl's Moving Castle", though I think that's more due to the dashing (male) figure of Howl than the rather grim plot. One of Ghibli's older films which is not available on this side of the Pacific but which is a beautiful perspective on a girl's growing up is "Only Yesterday"; Disney (the distributor) is unlikely to release it over here because it features the Japanese practice of families bathing communally, a frank look at teenage menstruation, and other such things which the Mouse assumes would be too much for us sensitive Westerners to take. But since it's also Disney which has made the other Ghibli titles available, I guess I can't complain too much.

I loved this list, with the exception of the Moon Spinners... I just didn't get it! A great list, regardless- to each his own, right??

My daughters are just turning 9 and 12 this year and I think this list is great.. I'm familiar with some of them, but was glad to see some 'new to me' movie suggestions that I can approve and they can enjoy. :)

Good Choices (Reply to this comment)

Nice list of acceptable movies that are so hard to find (and getting increasingly harder) these days.
Good job! And, good luck with that writing.

that you will not be writing any more reviews, but I definitely understand. There are a lot of things I should be doing instead of all of the hours a week I spend here, but I guess I am addicted!
Good luck!!

Oh, now, you are forcing me to tell! Well, okay. The Princess Bride and The Moon Spinners, with Mouse Hunt somewhere in my "like to watch on a lazy day for a laugh" list.
Ah, but then, I'm old enough to get away with it. I can even buy (and review) children's books without too many raised eyebrows. HeHehe!

I hope you don't think of this as an insult, Vania, because I'm so much older than you, but you are definitely my kindred spirit!

Should I admit .. (Reply to this comment)

that at least a couple of those movies are among my favorites, even though I am a year or two 8^D past my teens?
This is really a useful list for people with daughters. Great job!
