| joshjohnson's Full Review: Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959K Top Load Washer |
I really don't see how people have a problem with this washing machine! It is a wonderful addition to our family of four. After narrowing down our selections on Shopping.com for the criteria we were looking for, I was left with the Whirlpool Calypso which was exactly what we were looking for. After reading the opinions I was kind of scared to purchase it, but after reading past the "hype" I was confident that this would be a good purchase.
The cleaning power is amazing. Example: My boys were out climbing our "hill" in our front yard shortly after a brief rainshower (we live in the mountains!). After barely making it to the top of this 40ft high mudpile, they decided to go sliding down... in their jeans! After sliding and rolling all the way down they were covered in mud (I mean COVERED!). It was straight to the tub for them and the clothes made it in the wash about fifteen minutes later. I put the clothes in, Heavy Duty cycle, Tide HE detergent, and prayers that this would work. What came out was amazing... clean and great smelling clothes. After about 25 minutes later in the dryer they were able to wear the same outfits to dinner that night!
As far as the claims that "the whites look dingy", those are not true. Do these people know what Clorox Bleach is? 1/4 cup bleach, Tide HE detergent, Whitest Whites cycle, and out comes the whitest and cleanest socks, t-shirts, and underwear, and they smell so clean!
A washing machine that "tears up clothes"? I dont think so! Our clothes last longer. Jeans do not look faded after a few months and t-shirts hold their color and printed designs. Being a firefighter I have reflective lettering on the backs of my t-shirts. After numerous washes sometimes the lettering will fade, peel, or separate. Not the case with this machine. Lettering still looks bright and the shirts still look new... I could pass for a probie! Another thing that I am happy to report is that I can finally wash my king size comforter and two pillow shams at the same time!
This machine comes with soo many preset cycles that it really is just a two button start. Press the cycle you want, and press start! The water temp and soil level comes pre-programmed with the difference cycles so as to maximize the cleaning power and efficiency . Which it does! I have noticed a drop in our water bill, not only because it uses less water, but it also holds more clothes than a conventional heavy duty machine so I do laundry a lot less. Some cycles (i.e. 53min. Heavy Duty, and 49min. Whitest Whites) do seem to be a bit too long, but I cannot complain with the results! Also, I found I only use these cycles about once a month when washing comforters, car wash towels/rags, and keeping the whites their brightest. It can take a few weeks to learn which cycle you should use for which load of clothes.
When I placed the order 3 weeks before Christmas 2004 they were on backorder. After waiting about 4 weeks I was getting upset one day and I called to complain. Whirlpool sent me a $200 Lowes (I ordered it through Lowes) gift card overnight and Lowes offered to knocked $100 off the price of each for being so patient. My order arrived a week and two days later. When Lowes delivered it to my door, the washing machine had a small ding and scratch on the bottom back corner (not noticeable once installed). After talking to the Assistant Manager he offered to knocked half off the price and, at my request, had a bottle of touchup paint shipped to my door a few days later. Great customer support and service to both.
I must warn you though. The "moldy" or "smell" a few others are referring to actually forms because of the condensation or splashed up water that can form on the inside portion of the lid and will form in other areas too. This is normal and is caused from the tight seal the lid makes. This can be cured. Leave the lid of the washing machine open. When I have company over I close mine, otherwise it stays open. Think of it this way, would you leave soaking wet floormats inside your car and then shut the doors for a few days? After a while it is really going to stink!
Take care of the stuff you have and it will last you a lifetime. Our previous washing machine was a Whirlpool my parents had bought new in 1980 just after the introduction of the beltless "direct drive", and before I was born! It still worked great (and looked fairly new) when I sold it. Just goes to show you the quality of craftsmanship when you take care of something. I personally clean and wipe down my washer and dryer about once a month. I plan to pass them down to my children some day.
