Handle With Care

The Bottom Line There isn't much to a trolling motor but it is fragile. Handle with care.
Over 85 members have read my last Epinion "Major Loss". I have thought it over and to tell you the truth, essays are still going to be a big part of Epinions. I have decided that I'm still going to include essays in my list of Epinions. Now, for the essay.
The Trolling Motor
Trolling motors aren't fast but they are quiet and good for fishing. Many people use trolling motors and many don't take care of them the right way. Here are some things to do that may improve the life of your trolling motor.
In The Water
Once you have your battery in place and hooked up you might want to go over this section. Before going out with your boat, make sure that your trolling motor is in the right place, not too low or too high. Once in deep water, make sure that you gradually increase the speed of your trolling motor, do not crank it up to full speed right away. For example, if you have a 5 speed trolling motor, don't click through all of the other speeds really fast to get to 5, slowly go up to 1 speed, 2 speed, and so on. Also you don't want to run your trolling motor out of water.
Out Of The Water
When done going out with your trolling motor you might want to do these things. Disconnect the battery from your trolling motor and take out the battery. Store the battery in a safe place. If you are using a small boat with no lift or cover I would recommend taking the trolling motor off too and storing that in a safe place. This might be a pain but it is good for the motor.
Short-Term Storage
If you are going to be gone for the week and you want to store your trolling motor somewhere here is what to do. Make sure that you have a safe non-damp area that your trolling motor can keep a pleasant room temperature. I would recommend putting something over your trolling motor such as a blanket or tarp but that isn't needed.
Long-Term Storage
Off for the winter? Here are some things to do when there is long-term storage at hand. There isn't much to a trolling motor and that makes this area easy but your trolling motor is fragile so handle with care. When done with your trolling motor put it in a really safe place where no water or extreme cold or hot temperatures can get in. Even better make it a place in your home instead of a shed or garage or down in the basement. Also if you would like, put a blanket, tarp, or cloth to cover your motor. This will insure a happy trolling motor.
The Bottom Line
A trolling motor is really easy to take care of but it is fragile. One false move and you might chip the prop or another area of the motor. All you have to remember is handle with care!
