Perry Watkins (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, in Movies
He was at the screening of the film I saw (indeed, sitting directly in front of me) and was entertaining speaking after the showing. A sad loss, plus he was unsifficiently recognized while alive and the film does not seem readily available. Why has it not been on PBS? (that I know of)
I hated the Peter Adair AIDS documentary (to which I gave money for completion), but "Word Is Out" has many touching moments. George Mendelhal recalling the singing of "God save the queens" at the Black Cat in the 50s is one I didn't mention in the list (and Rick Stokes, the man who received electroshock to "cure" him) was my lawyer until he retired.

I knew Perry Watkins. He was a sweet, sweet man. I miss him. 'Word is Out' remains a milestone for me. I was in high school when it was on PBS. It was the first time I'd seen gay people in a 'normal' context in the media. I'm glad you included it.

for the great resource!
and a note on It's Elementary--not only is it great for casual viewing, it's great as a teaching tool; at least, it worked quite well with the first- and second-year college students i used it with last year.

I'm appalled at the number of these I haven't seen. (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for calling them to my attention. I would have thought I'd have had more exposure, at least at the Atlanta LGBT film fests I used to attend...
Thanks again -- Kristin

What a wonderful list! (Reply to this comment)

Very comprehensive. I have seen most of these documentaries, the rest I'm going to try to find as soon as possible.
I especially applaud your choice of Silverlake. We used to use that one to train buddy volunteers at the HIV services agency where I did a student practicum. I've seen it perhaps half a dozen times, and it still makes me cry.
Again, excellent work.
