You're Lucky if you can find some Lucky Lager

Popular Products in Spirits and Beers
The Bottom Line A fine drinkin' beer that is easy on the pocket book. Has rebus puzzles printed on the inside of the bottle cap, an entertaining gimmick.

This is a good old American lager that used to be brewed by the General Brewing Company of Tumwater, Washington. (Cool name for a town where beer is brewed: tum + water). Lucky Lager has been brewed since 1934 (Prohibition in America ended in 1933), and was aged and lagered in ice-cold cellars.

The General Brewing Company has since been purchased by Pabst, and this beer is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Pabst, having also purchased brand lines previously produced by the Stroh Brewing Company, produces a huge array of popular beers:

Olympia, Rainier, Falstaff, Ballantine
Lucky Lager, Pearl, Stroh's, Schlitz
Schaefer, Schmidt, Old Style, Lone Star
Special Export, Pabst Blue Ribbon
Old Milwaukee, Colt 45
Country Club Malt Liquor, Schlitz Malt Liquor

Much consolidation has taken place in the beer business over the past 25 years, and most of the very popular beer brands are controlled by a small number of firms and their reach is becoming increasingly more global in scale.

The Beer - Lucky Lager
--------------------------------------------------
I felt compelled to purchase this beer out of intense curiosity. A few months ago, I saw the movie Kalifornia, starring David Duchovny and Brad Pitt. Pitt played a red-neck killer (Early Grace), whose beer of choice was Lucky Lager.

This is a pleasant, light lager that pours with a light yellow color and produces a nice head. It has a fairly sweet, malty aroma . Tastes fine for a mass-brewed lager, with a finish that is a little on the sweet side. I actually find that I prefer this beer over Budweiser, Miller, or Coors. Love those little brown bottles and the entertaining pictograms/rebus puzzles that are printed on the underside of the bottle caps.

Price and Availability
--------------------------------------------------
Very inexpensive: about $7 per twelve-pack of 11-ounce bottles. I purchased a carton of 12-bottles at a local Ralphs Supermarket, but this brand is becoming increasingly difficult to find.

Recommendations
--------------------------------------------------
This is a fun, good tasting, inexpensive beer that is bottled in short (6 inch tall) bottle that can be conveniently packed on those shelves in your refrigerator that don't offer much head  room. A perfect beer to serve to friends who are not particularly avid beer drinkers... allowing you to save those better bottles of beer for yourself.

In terms of price vs. performance, this beer rates 3 stars in my book. I recommend it, even if it is a cheap American lager.

Pros: Inexpensive, easy drinking, compact bottle size; a nostalgic brew.
Cons: None, in terms of price vs. performance. This is a decent beverage.
