The Bottom Line It may be costing us money wise, but it is teaching responsibilities and value...

Our youngest son hates to read, But as like all children he loves to stay buried in Television and video games...
It never failed, every time a new show came out, he was glued to the T.V. Then out would come a new video game... He would want me to purchase these game not even figuring whether or not the cost would be to high.

Then: I went on a yard sale shopping spree - I found one book for my 8 year old that really caught my eye: "What to do when you Mom and Dad says... Earn your Allowance! Written by Joy Wilt Berry.

I purchased the book for $.25. Took it home and handed it to my son. This book has added the enjoyment of reading to my son's life, but it is costing me a "MINT".

I have tried and tried to get my son to "Clean his room, pick up laundry and toys" all of the above that just about every parent faces, yet the child declines in doing.

I have grounded and taken away the television and video games so much to the fact that he just doesn't care! Therefore, we have resulted in the fact that if he wants a new game, he has to earn the $$$.

This book covers the fact that an allowance is a share of the family income, and in a child's point of view, they are entitled to a share of the family's possessions. This means that in addition to food, clothing, and shelter, they should get a portion of any money that is made. YES, it is fantastic. That is just one side of the situation though...

The Other Side: Belonging to any group requires an equal amount of GIVE and TAKE. To receive you earnings - you have to contribute to the family by taking care of yourself, and what is in your possession.

Now, our son leaves nothing laying around, and at the end of the day, he makes sure that all of his dirty clothes are put in the laundry. He even TRIES to do things like dusting the furniture, and folding the laundry. In return my son is able to purchase the video games and toys of his choosing. (We let him spend his money on what he wants, and we do not try to influence him in any way.)

The main thing that this book has done for our son is the fact that his reading has increased, and that is a +++. He has learned that the more he does around the house, and to help the family, the more praise and $$$ he will receive!!!
Also he has learned to respect the things that we do as a family, and with him helping out around the house, he feels the responsibility of taking care of things, and he is satisfied with the completion of his intentions...
