Quick tips to avoid spams

Jun 30 '01

The Bottom Line Use filters, and use them effectively. Watch for key words in spam e-mails and adapt your filters periodically. Finally " Be responsible" yourself.

"How to avoid spam e-mails?"
You might have read this a lot of times if you have been online for a couple of years. But still, nothing controls spam e-mails the way you want them. Here is a list things that you might try. The first couple of suggestions(you might have already read them on other sites)are the standard stuff and then I have found a few others too.

1)Never give your primary e-mail to anyone or any site you don't trust. Share it only with your close friends.

2)Have 2 or 3 secondary e-mails that you can use for online shopping or for other purposes(like contacting someone you met in a chat room).

3)Use filters to sort your incoming mails into corresponding folders.

4)Block mails with key words like "Get rich instantly", "Get cash now", " Free pass for XXX site", etc. Keep watching spam e-mails for key words.

5)Adapt your filters periodically because advertisers come up with different catchy phrases. That way, you can avoid receiving the same e-mail from different sources.

6)What do you do if you get too many spam e-mails. Go to sites like
http://www.scamcop.net

This free service will let you send a public spam report to network administrators. SpamCop routes your complaint accurately and works with network administrators and spammers to turn the tide. They also offer you a free advanced filtering account. You might want to give a try. It works pretty effectively.

7) Don't believe spammers. Have your own filters and blockers. Spammers will tell you that you can unsubscribe from their list by sending an email (usually with "unsubscribe" subject line). Believe me, it does not work most of the time. When you do the spammer will then know your e-mail is active and may send more spam or even sell your e-mail address to other spammers.

8)Please don't forward mails to people you are not too familiar with. It is nuisance for them.

Be responsible and enjoy browsing.
