The Bottom Line Try using my Poor Man's Spam Filter and see if it works for you.
Early on in my internet usage life, which began in the mid 90's when it was still "the big, cool thing", I was pretty generous with my email address. If you wanted access to a lot of sites and online games and that sort of thing, they wanted to know who you are, and always wanted to know your email address. Thinking nothing of it, I gave it to them. I now receive dozens upon dozens of spam mails to my various email accounts, and often get the same message in each account, but coming from a different bogus sender. Amazing. Most everyone will tell you not to reply back to any of those messages and say that you wish to be removed, because that will do only 2 things: 1. It will let the spammers know that you have a valid email address 2. It will tell them that you read those spam emails, because the removal link is listed at the BOTTOM of the email. 3. It will most definitely result in you getting more spam. The best thing to do to get rid of spam is just to delete it, which can be a bothersome task - I know. However, I found a slightly better way to save you the trouble of having to delete those emails your self. I call it my Poor Man's Spam Filter. You see, most spam have a message at the end that says something to the effect of "To be removed from any future mailing lists, please reply and put 'Remove' in the subject line". ...In the subject line... Think about the above line of text. Have you ever received any email, other than spam, that would possibly contain that bit of text? Ah ha! Using Outlook Express, it has a feature called Message Rules. In Outlook Express, You can get to it by clicking Tools - Message Rules - Mail. Just create a rule that says "When the message body contains....delete it". In the rule box the word 'specific words' will be in blue, to indicate a hyperlink. Click on that link and enter "in the subject line" as the words to look for. You'd be suprised at just how many emails this sends directly to your deleted items folder. You can make new rules for any cuss word or dirty word or any other word that you don't want to read in your email. Just simply adding 'XXX' or 'Hard core' as words to look for can really put a dent in the number of porn spams that may end up in your inbox for young eyes to see. My Poor Man's Filter may not be the best or most effective solution, but it is quick, easy, and FREE to implement, and will at least save you the trouble of a few clicks. |
