| lllopez's Full Review: DAP Crackshot Spackling Paste |
When we built our home, I insisted on having plaster walls installed throughout. It proved to be an expensive proposition but well worth the time and expense. The one thing we were warned about and expected were setting cracks, and they did not disappoint us. I knew that I would eventually pull out the knife and spackling paste; when I did I chose DAP Crackshot Spackling Paste.
THE WORKING ESSENTIALS
DAP advertises this product as a high performance acrylic polymer knife grade formula that is ideal for filling holes in wood, brick, stone, plaster, drywall and even works on metal doors and trim. Wow, imagine the possibilities! All I wanted to do was fill plaster. DAP Crackshot Spackling Paste can be used in both indoor and outdoor applications.
DAP Crackshot Spackling Paste comes in a creamy white texture, much like pudding and applies easily with a taping knife. I consulted with my plastering contractor that it was a go-to product for easy repairs, eliminating the need for a white coat on light repairs. If you are filling in voids to the plasterboard or lathe, then it is best to apply plaster and white coat for better results. If, however, you have plaster to cover over, this product works just fine.
Applying this product, I found the best results were achieved when you used a knife 3 times the width of the crack you are filling so as to feather the edges over solid surfaces which allows for better results when sanding. I like using a finishing trowel on larger cracks and make two or three passes, period. The best repairs are occur when you apply the product and leave it alone, although it does have a longer than usual handling time, which is useful if you are using a pan with a large quantity of the product.
DAP Crackshot Spackling Paste does not crack or shrink and I have used it to fill voids over ¾ deep with great results after two even applications. I allowed 6 hours drying time on that repair and about 2-3 hours for routine ½ repairs. I tape a crack after I gouge out a void to accommodate 1 gauze tape, feathering it to the edge. This product dries with a chalky surface so a good wiping with cheesecloth helps before applying a basecoat of paint or primer.
Sanding is amazingly easy with a sanding block and a good 80-100 grit sandpaper. Generally speaking, most of your sanding is minimized by applying DAP Crackshot Spackling Paste sparingly and evenly, mindful of not leaving high spots when applying.
If you are filling in nail holes, you can eliminate the sanding and primer process with great results sometimes applying the product with your finger.
IN SUMMARY
DAP Crackshot Spackling Paste is an easy, yet effective product to repair any number of surfaces, easily yielding professional results, which even the least experienced user can enjoy with little consultation. You need to be cognizant of allowing the surface to thoroughly dry if applying oil based paint. DAP warns the consumer not to use this products in less than 50ºF, and not to apply within 24 hours of rain.
The easily snap resealable tub has a shelf life of one year, and comes in ½ pint, quart and gallon sizes. Should you require less product for your repair you can also purchase a 5.5 oz squeeze tube. With a quick water cleanup, your tools are ready for your next repair. What else could be easier?
I am really comfortable recommending DAP Crackshot Spackling Paste as a really easy, and effective alternative to staring at those annoying cracks in your walls and ceilings.
