Opinion Summary
Honda could learn something from Ford's new Mustang
by mkaresh | Mar 13 '05
Pros: Looks appropriately trucky, innovative in-bed trunk, drives more like a car than any other truck
Cons: Could be more innovative still, major mismatch between styling and (boring) driving experience

It's not just the ride, no one wants a lumpy ride. But it feels about as wimpy as a minivan, which is not how it looks.

It seems to hit its target (Reply to this comment)

I don't expect you to know the "target" audience for every single vehicle. It's just that I was considering and have been researching it. Apparently, this truck wasn't designed to try and outsell and outtruck the Ford F150 or Chevy Silverado. It was targeted to the buyer who doesn't necessarily like trucks, but has discovered their utility is hard to pass up. So, they want it to ride like a car but still have the option of having a bed whenever they have that infrequent (but increasing in number) need to load something large in a bed that's too tall for a SUV. These users don't go offroading unless you count driving up to the mountains to go skiing.

It was interesting reading the review from your angle. However, Honda never had any intention of it riding like a truck. It is interesting how they wanted it to look so much like a hard core truck when they never intended for it to ride like one.

Interesting comment. Any chance you'll review the Ridgeline yourself?

If I had to pay to advertise my site, the service could no longer be free. Seems some people would prefer it that way. Doesn't make sense to me, though.

In addition, I wouldn't plug just any old thing in my reviews. The website is intended as an integral part of the reviews. Epinions doesn't provide the ability to frequently update this sort of information. My site does.

Useful review as always, but boring? (Reply to this comment)

I agree the truck is pretty ugly, but I have seen a few with upgraded wheels that managed to give it an at least interesting look. The quality of it makes it look better in person, too. With current discounts the low end model is a virtual bargain.

As for the "boring" driving experience, well, I think you might be making the same mistake the car mags do on pickups. They're not cars, yet even though I appreciate good handling too, you have to compare them to other trucks, not cars. I've owned just about every big pickup made in the last decade, and I use them for towing and work daily. Trust me, after a while in them "boring" is nice. That "trucklike" experience wears you out after a few hours. My Ram is loud and roars coarsely when you want power out of its Hemi. It does handle well, turns in quickly, but does so at the price of a stiff ride. It also feels HUGE, being just a reg cab 2wd, it feels much bigger than previous extended cabs and 4x4's I've owned. My Tundra was smooth riding but understeered badly and was too soft. So does the Nissan Titan, btw. It's a pig in turns. A set of springs fixed the tundra and made it a quite sporty ride. I had to buy a 3rd family vehicle to get me back/forth to another home in Florida 2x a month because the Ram is just too crude and sucks too much fuel. I think a Ridgeline type truck would be perfect for my needs. Smooth and reasonably economical enough to do double duty, with enough power for light towing duties. The Tacoma is a good choice too, but it is tippy at high speeds according to my test drive and other reports. You can make any truck handle better with suspension upgrades, though.

The Ram and huge F-150 might be more macho, but after a short test drive, the cumbersomeness gets boring itself.

I'd also agree with the other comment that posting the info on your website does come off like an advertisement, even for a free service.

Very little sensory input of any sort makes for a boring driving experience.

As for the website, it is an integral part of these reviews. I created it to provide information that needs to be updated frequently, and thus proved too tedious to provide in my reviews. I cannot update 300 reviews every time prices and incentives change. I have yet to charge any of my readers a cent to use the site, and frankly don't care if I never do.

The fee for the reliability information is just there to encourage participation. After all, why should only a fraction of the people do all of the work so that everyone can benefit?

First of all, I find it a little off-putting that you are referring to some profit-making venture in your review. I thought Epinions was to be free of this type of thing.

Secondly, you criticize the vehicle for being boring...what does that mean? I never thought a vehicle was supposed to entertain me. If there were a particular part of the driving dynamic that caused you to be bored, please share that with us.

Yes, the vehicle sure is ugly. I find if I view it from the front 3/4 angle, it looks much better as the massive 'B' pillar is partially obscured from view.

Re: Are you praising the Ridgeline with faint damns? (Reply to this comment)

If you drove the Ridgeline and found the experience to your liking, then by all means buy it. I'd personally prefer it had a more rugged feel to it, or at least a throatier exhaust (like those in Nissan's trucks), but this is of course a personal preference.

You certainly seem to know what a truck is supposed to be like! I guess I thought "carlike" was a pretty desireable feature, since most of us spend more time taking trips than hauling or towing or jumping puddles.
I'm pretty impressed with the Ridgeline: I like its driving position, comfort, storage options, sure-footedness, and solidity. In fact, I like it better than any other SUV or truck I've driven so far, and I've tested a lot of vehicles in the same size and price range.
But since you seem to know so much about what a truck should be, I think I'll wait a little longer for you to apprise me of a better solution. If you can, please let me know before July, when I'm thinking of buying a new Honda Ridgeline....

I've only seen the one they have where there's these guys in the beginning wearing these macho belts before it cuts to a guy wearing a Honda logo. According to my memory, I don't think they mention ride at all.

Sorry to confuse you. :)

I'm missing your point about the ads. Don't they also say the ride is smooth?

When I read your review, the first word that popped to my head was "ouch!" Hey, Honda can't hit a home run every time. Quite surprising to say the least. They should've known that a vehicle is not sold based on its looks (unless you're rich, then I'd buy an xB).

It'll probably sell for those middle-aged or older and for those who want a truck without the rough ride. Again, like you said, we'll have to wait and see. But on the other hand, their commercials are a bit misleading if I take you word for the ride quality.

Great review as always! :)

I did forget to mention that it is butt ugly, didn't I? Then again, the Hummer reference should do it. Some people think the H2 is good looking. They should similarly find the Ridgeline attractive.

I have read since posting this review that Honda is planning to market the truck mostly to people who already own a truck. Hence the line in the TV ads, "most importantly, it's a Honda." That should tell us something right there.

Great review; but I think this thing is a disaster... if your gonna buy a truck, buy a real one! This is a poser.
