Hoepfner Porter: A Porter with a German Twist
by andaryl | Jul 01 '01
Fairly light for a porter, but may be the only one brewed in Germany. Could it be a lager influence? Offers excellent toffee-ish/toasty/smoky flavors.

EBC stands for European Brewing Convention, and is the "metric" method for determining coloration. Right, you knew that. Here's some math you may not have known. Conversion is simple: (Lovibond * 2.65) minus 1.2 = EBC value. So that 120 EBC reading is appoximately 46 SRM (sounds correct for this "almost black" Porter).

The EBC, like all things European, are debating a switch to a new system, just to keep everyone in the EU on their toes and buying new calculators. So it's worth ignoring. I mean, what do those Europeans know about making beer, anyway?
